dish. Cover the baking
dish with foil and bake
for 1 hour, or until the
vegetables are tender.
Adjust seasonings,
sprinkle with chives,
and serve hot. Makes 12
servings.

PFLAUMEN KUCHEN
This old-fashioned
coffeecake takes
advantage of summer
fruits. You can make this
not-too-sweet kuchen
with peaches or apples
as well.

Topping:

1 tsp. cinnamon

¼ cup sugar

Kuchen:

1½ cups all-purpose flour

1½ tsp. baking powder

1½ tsp. ground cinnamon

¾ cup (1½ sticks) unsalted

butter, room temperature

1½ cups sugar

3 large eggs

1 Tbsp. vanilla extract

5-7 large plums, halved, pitted

and cut into eighths

Directions:
Preheat oven to
350°F. Spray a 9- by
13-inch baking pan or
9-inch springform pan
equivalent with non-
stick cooking spray. Set
aside. Place the topping
ingredients in a small
bowl and stir to combine.
Set aside.
Place butter and sugar
in large bowl and beat
well with an electric mixer
until creamy. Beat in the
eggs. Add flour, baking
powder and cinnamon
and beat well. Spread
batter into the prepared
pan.
Arrange plums over
the batter, pressing them
into the batter slightly.
Sprinkle the kuchen with
the cinnamon and sugar
topping.
Place the kuchen in
the center of the oven
and bake 60-70 minutes
or until the top is golden
and the batter is set.
Cool and serve warm
or at room temperature,
cut into squares. Serves
12-16, heartily.

Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023. He
is the loving grandson of
Sarah Waldshan, Lea
Ashkenazi, and the late David
Waldshan and Yehuda
Ashkenazi.
Ezra is a student at Walnut
Creek Middle School in West
Bloomfield. One of his many
mitzvah projects consisted of
volunteering at Yad Ezra in
Berkley.

Aiden Jacob
Burnstein, son of
Keri and Lee
Burnstein, will be
called to the Torah
as a bar mitzvah at
Temple Israel in West
Bloomfield on Friday, Aug. 25,
2023. He is the loving grand-
child of Judith and Edward
Burnstein, Patricia Krentzin,
the late Joseph Selik and the
late Jeffrey Krentzin.
He is a student at Hillel
Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit in Farmington Hills.
Aiden’s most meaningful mitz-
vah project was baking and
selling cookies so he could
donate the proceeds to the
Alzheimer’s Association.

Kozlowski 101st
E

dith Kozlowski of West
Bloomfield will celebrate
her 101st birthday on Sept.
20, 2023. She will mark the day
with those closest to her: her
children, Jay (the late Linda)
(Renee), Ruthie, Joe (Jill); grand-
children, Rachel, Anna (Bryan),
David, Julia, Max and Ben; and
great-grandchildren, Elliot and
Sloane. She was the wife of the
late Marvin Kozlowski; they had
been married for 70 years. After
surviving the Holocaust, Edith and Marvin reconnected in
the States and were married in 1950 in Detroit, created a
beautiful family and instilled their values in its members.
Edith and her family continue to honor Marvin’s legacy as
they celebrate this milestone.
