ON THE GO PEOPLE | PLACES | EVENTS SPOTLIGHT Vlad Tovbin and his Gypsy Caravan GYPSY JAZZ ART AUG. 9, 2 PM continued from page 51 52 | AUGUST 3 • 2023 A group of Metro Detroit women, including members of the Jewish community, knew firsthand the power of scalp cooling therapy in saving their hair during cancer treatment. While chemotherapy saves lives, a devastating potential impact of the treatment is hair loss. Yet cold cap therapy, or scalp cooling, can help cancer patients maintain their hair and dignity. Ali Weitz, Madison Novice, Taylor Novice, Karlee Simmons, Molly Powers and Janet Gendelman, the women behind Cap & Conquer, have all benefited from cold cap therapy or supported a loved one who has. Yet scalp cooling is expensive — running anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 for treatment — and isn’t affordable for many. Most health insurances also don’t cover the treatment. Therefore, Cap & Conquer, a Michigan-based nonprofit, has made it its mission to raise funding for cold caps to make this critical therapy accessible for more cancer patients. The nonprofit’s biggest fundraising event is its annual Cap & Conquer Golf Outing, which will take place at Tam-O-Shanter Golf Club in West Bloomfield on Aug. 7. The third-annual event aims to raise $250,000 for scalp cooling therapy. Last year’s event raised $210,000, and Cap & Conquer sets its goal even higher for its 2023 fundraiser. Cap & Conquer Golf Outing will have a noon shotgun start and will include scramble golf and a variety of other activities. A silent auction, putting green contest, Hole-In-One challenge and more will make up the action- packed day raising funds for cancer patients. A cocktail hour with appetizers and open bar will follow the golf activities. Registration is now open and costs $250 per golfer to join. The registration fee includes a cart, practice balls, boxed lunch, entertainment and, of course, the open-bar cocktail hour. Those who aren’t golfers can also register for the cocktail hour portion of the event only for $125 per person.
