Both hate crime reform bills introduced by State Rep. Noah Arbit passed the Michigan House of Representatives with bipartisan support. The Michigan Hate Crime Act would expand the basis on which hate crimes can be charged to include sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, physical or mental disability, ethnicity and age. In addition to expanding the basis on which hate crimes could be charged, the legislation would update sentencing guidelines. Next, the legislation must be passed by the State Senate and then signed by the governor. State Hate Crime Bill Pass First Hurdle Rep. Noah Arbit Sharing Shabbat is a yearlong program for families with children ages 0-8. Families participate in monthly Shabbat experiences as they build relationships with families and learn how to celebrate Shabbat in their home. Sharing Shabbat welcomes families who are new to town, interfaith and families looking to make new connections in the community. Families who participate will enjoy an opening community Shabbat dinner and a closing Havdalah celebration, an art workshop with a local artist, beautiful keepsake Shabbat ritual items, a challah bake, a Parents’ Night Out and four home-hosted Shabbat meals (can be Friday night dinner or Saturday brunch/lunch). Families will be placed in small cohorts that will gather together in each other’s homes to celebrate Shabbat. Hosts will be provided with a $75 stipend to help cover the cost of the meal as well as a Sharing Shabbat host kit. To apply, visit https:// tinyurl.com/mr3dstnu by July 21.
