Legal Guide LISTINGS

Hear from Jewish
Genealogy Expert
J

oin Jennifer
Mendelsohn, co-found-
er of the DNA Reunion
Project at the Center for
Jewish History, to learn
more about the fascinating
and empowering process of
Jewish genealogical research
at “Reclaiming Our Story:
The Promise and Potential of
Jewish Genealogy,” Tuesday,
June 27, beginning at 6
p.m. at Temple Beth El in
Bloomfield Township.
Mendelsohn will
show how Jewish family
research is unnecessarily
shrouded in myths and
misunderstandings (have
you heard the one about how
the Nazis “destroyed all the
records?”), dealing an unfair
blow to a community with

an especially urgent need to
understand and reclaim its
past.
Her sleuthing has reunited
long-lost families, debunked
decades-old family legends
and unearthed poignant,
hilarious and sometimes
shocking revelations. She’ll
also introduce you to the
innovative use of genetic
genealogy as a means to
reclaim Jewish family history,
including the founding of
the DNA Reunion Project
at the Center for Jewish
History, which leverages
the revolutionary power of
commercial DNA testing to
reunite families separated by
the Holocaust.
Each year, the Mary
Einstein Shapero Memorial

Lecture series hosts a notable
speaker. The enriching
series is sponsored by the
Honorable Walter Shapero
and Kathleen Straus, and
due to their generosity,
this program remains free
and accessible to all. It is
co-sponsored by Joan Meyers
Jampel Center for Michigan
Jewish Heritage and Jewish
Genealogical Society Society

of Michigan.
The evening begins with a
6 p.m. pre-glow for “Friends
of the Jampell Center,”
followed by the 7 p.m.
lecture in the Maas Chapel
and an 8 p.m. oneg in the
Slotkin Foyer.
