College Scholarship Program

Open enrollment for high school 
students entering college in 
the fall of 2023. We anticipate 
awarding three scholarships for 
the 2023-24 academic year in 
the amount of $5,000 each. It is 
our goal that these scholarships 
will inspire the honorees to 
pay our gift forward after 
graduation by serving as leaders 
in their communities and as 
ambassadors for the B’nai B’rith 
Great Lake Region’s College 
Scholarship program. Deadline 
for applying is May 19th.

B’nai B’rith is recognized as a vital voice in promoting Jewish unity and continuity, a 
staunch defender of the State of Israel, a tireless advocate of behalf of senior citizens and 
a leader in disaster relief. For 180 years, wherever there is a need, there is B’nai B’rith.

• 1843-B’nai B’rith is established

• 1852-Opens the Maimonides Library in NYC, the first Jewish public library in the U.S.

• 1857-The Pisgah Lodge is founded in Michigan, the 34th lodge in the United States

• 1888-Founds the Jerusalem Lodge, the first Hebrew speaking organization in what becomes the 
State of Israel

• 1913-Organizes its Anti-Defamation League to combat anti-Semitism & derisive stereotypes

• 1924-Establishes the Jewish youth group AZA

• 1925-Adopts the on-campus organization Hillel

• 1947-Eddie Jacobson travels to Washington to convince U.S. President Harry S. Truman to meet 
with Zionst leader Chaim Weizmann, resulting in the U.S. backing the partition of Palestine

• 1947-Named the first NGO (non-governmental organization) at the United Nations

• 1948-On May 14th Israel declares statehood 

• 1971-Dedicates its first senior housing project in PA, beginning a national program of affordable 
housing for seniors. Today there are over 5,000 units.

• 1980-Dedicates its World Center in Jerusalem

• 1989-Yad Vashem selects B’nai B’rith as its U.S. representative to oversee and conduct 
Holocaust remembrance observances

• 1993-Celebrates 150th anniversary 

• 1997-Activates its Cuban Jewish Relief Project via the committee on Cuban Affairs

• 2003-Expands its mission to enhance seniors’ quality of life via the Seniors’ Advocacy Program

• 2014-Took the lead advocating for Yom Kippur to be an official U. N. holiday

• 2018-Celebrates 175 years of making a difference in the world
