JHSM celebrates the history of
Hastings Street (Detroit’s first
Jewish neighborhood) with an
exhibit at the Detroit Historical
Museum, April-July 2024. To
source objects for it, JHSM
is holding a second heirloom
roadshow on Sunday, April 30,
from 3-5 p.m. at The Hawk in
Farmington Hills (29995 W
. 12
Mile Road).
According to JHSM President
Jeannie Weiner, “We had so
much interest at the first road-
show in December, we decided
to do it again. We invite the
community to join us, with or
without family heirlooms, and
watch the fun, hosted by our
fabulous emcee, Gail Offen.

Offen will highlight a selec-
tion of items from JHSM and
the DHM’s Jewish collections,
including Fanny Butzel’s 1861
wedding fan and a WWI Jewish
Welfare Board campaign poster.
Heirloom Roadshow
Committee Chair Barbara Cohn
noted, “The best part of the
first roadshow was seeing the
community come together and

hearing the objects’ stories. In
several instances, the December
attendees crowdsourced infor-
mation about their treasures’
provenances.

On April 30, six heirloom
experts, with expertise rang-
ing from Yiddish and Hebrew
texts and Judaica, to jewelry
and home décor, will be on
hand to evaluate the commu-
nity’s treasures. Elayne Gross
Photography will have a mobile
photo studio set up to photo-
graph objects.
JHSM Executive Director
Catherine Cangany, Ph.D.,
hopes to find items to showcase
in the 2024 exhibit. “The theme
is everyday life, 1880 to 1930,
so we are looking for objects of
all kinds, from letters and signs
in Yiddish, to kitchen imple-
ments and Judaica. That family
heirloom gathering dust in your
attic just might be what we have
been waiting for.
