Derek Paul Fershtman (Doron Shimson), son
of Linda and Robert Fershtman, was
surrounded by friends and family as he led
the congregation in prayer as he became a
bar mitzvah at Temple Shir Shalom in West
Bloomfield on March 25, 2023. He was
joined in celebration by his sibling Maya. Derek is the
loving grandson of Eileen Millstone, the late Donald
Stern, the late Edith Fershtman and the late Herman
Fershtman.
Derek attends seventh grade at Clifford Smart Middle
School in Commerce Township. He enjoyed his mitzvah
project of volunteering his time and playing with kids at
Play Place Autistic and Special Needs Center in Sterling
Heights.

High school students from the
Detroit area were among those
who traveled to Washington
from March 12-14 to be
part of American Jewish
Committee’s Leaders for
Tomorrow Advocacy Day.
The program brought
together Jewish high school
students from across the coun-
try to meet with Congressional
staffers, diplomats from Israel,
Bahrain and Morocco —
all parties to the Abraham
Accords —as well as top AJC
leaders, including CEO Ted
Deutch.

“Today’s students are tomor-
row’s leaders,
” said AJC High
School Affairs Director Aaron
Bregman. “This is the next
generation of advocates who
will stand up for American
Jews and Israel and lead the
fight against antisemitism.
This program provides the
tools to help them meet those
challenges when they head to
college.
”
To date, the Leaders for
Tomorrow program has
reached more than 1,900
students.
