RACHEL FINE
Rachel has
been part of
the Metro
Detroit Jewish
community for
as long as she
can remember.
She grew up in Southfield and
attended Temple Beth El until
graduation, where she served
as the youth group president.
After going away to Kalamazoo
College, Rachel returned to our
community where she spent
five years living and working in
Southwest Detroit with Repair
the World. During that time,
she managed the PeerCorps
Detroit program for three years,
which connects Jewish teens
from the suburbs to the city of
Detroit through service work.
The Jewish experience
that has been most formative
has been Rachel’s Tamarack
Camps journey. She started at
camp when she was 8 years
old. In 2006, she spent her
first summer at Charles N.
Agree Outpost camp, where
she fell in love with wilderness
camping. After that, she spent
every summer until 2014 at
Agree or Camp Kennedy. She
was a staff member on the
Eastern Appalachia travel trip
in 2015 and returned full time
to Tamarack Camps working
in development. She currently
serves as the Community
Engagement and Outpost
Director at Tamarack, where
she oversees both Agree
and Kennedy, does grant
writing and works with other
community organizations.
In her free time, she sits
on the board of the Anti-
Defamation League (ADL).
Rachel owns a house in Oak
Park where she lives with her

puppy, Bear. She plays adult rec
league soccer in the Detroit City
Football League three times a
week. People might not know
that she lived in Costa Rica for a
year and is fluent in Spanish.

ARI
GOTTLIEBER
Ari Gottlieber
is devoted to
doing his part
in making his
corner of the
world a better
place by putting his heart and
care into the Jewish community
of Temple Beth Israel in Bay
City and Saginaw. Despite
its small size, Beth Israel is
a vibrant community and
important spiritual home for the
Jewish community of Bay and
Saginaw counties.
During the pandemic, Ari
helped lead the effort to bring
the Beth Israel community
together, organizing lay-led
Torah study groups, delivering
Pesach gift-bags to congregants,
and facilitating online services
and gatherings.
He is currently the vice
president of the TBI Board,
overseeing kitchen and social
events, including community
Yom Kippur Break-the-Fasts,
seders and holiday celebrations.
He also strives to be a
supportive figure to those who
have come to explore and make
TBI their new spiritual home.
In 2015, Ari received his BFA
in printmaking from Saginaw
Valley State University, and
he is currently a family health
advocate for the ShareCare
phone app.
In his free time, Ari enjoys
cycling, hiking along the
AuSable River with his dog
Magenta, and has been known
to venture down to Detroit
and Ann Arbor for cultural
and arts events. He is honored
to be included in this list of
fantastic community leaders

and grateful to the Jewish News
for recognizing the important
community in Bay City.

LAUREN
RUBIN
Lauren Rubin,
32, is proud to
say she wears
many hats. As
an employee
of eight years
at the Jewish Federation,
Lauren has served in many
roles, including employment
specialist with JVS/NEXTGen
Detroit, senior associate and
associate director of NEXTGen
Detroit, and now philanthropic
advancement senior associate.
Lauren earned her bachelor’s
degree at Indiana University
and is a proud Hoosier.
Following her bachelor’s degree,
Lauren earned her master’s
degree in social work from
the University of Michigan in
2014 and became fully licensed
shortly thereafter.
Jewish community is an
important part of Lauren’s
life as she is a product of
our community, born and
raised here in Metro Detroit.
In fact, Jewish community
and Jewish philanthropy run
through Lauren’s blood — her
mother was an employee of the
Federation and is still an active
volunteer, and her father has
had active involvement serving
as president of YAD and as the
president of Tamarack Camps.
Because of this, Lauren believes
strongly in our community
remaining vibrant, today and in
the future.
Lauren is a proud “boy
mom,
” raising sons Abe, 3,
and Wally, 1, who both attend
the ECC at Hillel Day School.
She is married to Adam, also
born and raised in our Jewish
community. She is an animal
lover, as well, and dog mom
to Axel, a 3-year-old golden
retriever. Lauren loves to travel,
