Monthly Lectures
Focus on ‘The Year
of Safed, Israel’
Jewish Ferndale is dedicating
this year as The Year of Safed,
Israel. An ongoing art exhibit
lines the walls featuring artists
and themes from Safed.
Each month will feature a
scholarly lecture focusing on
the uniqueness of this Galilee
city.
The first installment fea-
tured Rabbi Eliezar Finkelman
of Congregation Ohr
Chadash. The lecture focused
on one of the pivotal events
that shaped the development
of modern Jewish history.
The next lecture is set
for Feb. 16, when Rabbi
Boruch Cohen will present

A Mysticism of Safed” at 7:30
p.m. Other monthly lectures
will follow.
No prerequisite knowledge
is required, and light refresh-
ments are served each month.

The Zekelman Holocaust
Center (The HC) is now
accepting submissions for
the 2023 Kappy Family Art
& Writing Competition
co-sponsored by the Family of
Raphael Schwartz. This year’s
prompt is “
Art as Resistance,

encouraging students to take
inspiration from and apply
the lessons of the Holocaust
to their work in the categories
of poetry, fiction prose, 2D
and 3D art, and new this year,
graphic art. The competition
is open to seventh- through
12th-graders in Michigan,
through March 24.
