BERNICE KAY
ROSENTHAL
TROGAN, 73, of
Birmingham,
passed away
peacefully with
her family by her side Dec. 30,
2022.
Bernice Kay Rosenthal
Trogan was born in Detroit,
on Jan. 23, 1949. She was the
little sister of Barbara “Babs”
Leib and daughter of Barbara
Rosenbloom and Edward
Rosenthal. Bernice graduated
from Mumford High School
in 1967.
After her father passed in
1971, she fell madly in love
with the city of Birmingham
and continued to live there,
in numerous homes and
apartments for the remainder
of her life
Bernice received her
undergraduate degree from
Oakland University with an

expertise in mathematics. She
worked several years using
this skill, prior to beginning
graduate school in 1976.
Bernice graduated from
Wayne State University in
1978 with a master’s in social
work. Her first employment
as a social worker was at
Beaumont Hospital. After a
few years, she moved on to the
Detroit Psychiatric Institute,
where she remained for 19
years, leaving just prior to its
closing. While at DPI, she was
injured by a patient, causing
her to develop a degenerative
hearing loss. She was able to
continue her private practice
for many years until it became
too difficult to continue.
While Bernice had a few
very dear partners in life, in
1991 she married the love of
her life, Tony Trogan.
She enjoyed cooking and
entertaining. She devoted
herself to preparing Tony’s
favorite meals on a very
regular basis. They had a
wonderful life full of travel
and fun. A second home in
Saugatuck and lots of dogs
made for many memories for
those they loved.
After Anthony passed in
2017, it was not easy being
alone again. Bernice kept
herself busy with friends and
family and Buster. She loved
to knit presents for loved ones
and left many cozy gifts for all
to remember her. Bernice was
a shopper extraordinaire and
could find the ideal designer
bargain across the store. She
had a loving relationship with
her family as well as a family
of friends, many of whom
she cherished from her teens
and early 20s. Her laughter,
warmth and dedication to
those she loved are greatly
missed.

She was bonus mother to
Christina Trogan and Jim
LaMie; loving mom of Buster
Trogan; beloved sister of Joel
and Barbara Leib; sister-in-law
of Gloria Novak; adored auntie
of Cheryl and Ronald Stern,
Lisa and Danny Klein, and
Eric and Jodi Leib; cherished
great-aunt of Nathan, Sammy
(fiancée, Taylor Yendick)
and Jonah Stern, Sydney and
Hannah Knoll, Joshua and
Benjamin Klein, Morgan and
Noah Leib; devoted friends
throughout her life, among
whom were Cathy Frank,
Stephen Smith and Wendy
Talan.
Mrs. Trogan was the
beloved wife for 25 years
of the late Anthony “Tony”
Trogan; sister-in-law of the
late Camille Augustine;
loving daughter of the late
Barbara and the late Manford
Rosenbloom and the late
Edward Rosenthal.
