cational services. New tables
have been ordered, and the
volunteers hope to add some
comfortable chairs for the
teachers to use when reading
to their classes. Each student
will receive a Pasteur Library
card and will soon begin tak-
ing out books. Hall, Pasteur’s
principal, plans to apply for
a librarian from the Detroit
Public Schools Community
District.
While there was some

initial skepticism about the
ability of volunteers to reno-
vate and reopen the library,
Jacobs was committed to this
goal and convinced others
to share her mission. “Each
day, the library evolves,” says
Jacobs, an attorney who lives
in Southfield. She continues
to help out at the library —
such an important part of her
childhood at Pasteur — and
hopefully, now for its current
and future students.

Joined Together to Help Pasteur School
Pasteur alumnae Marcy Tatken Feldman and
Deborah Blocker Manning started the Pasteur
Alumni Association in 1997 to provide enrichment
opportunities and other help for Pasteur students.
Renamed the Friends of Pasteur in 2019, the
nonprofit organization donates 150 books annually
to students and classrooms, sponsors class trips,
organizes a Career Day, provides volunteer tutors
and gives Christmas baskets to low-income families
identified by school staff. During the pandemic, Friends
of Pasteur donated extensive funds and supplies to
help 125 Pasteur families in need.
Board members recently packed individual art
supply packages for Pasteur’s 344 students as a
Christmas present.
