LILLIAN FOX
FREEDLAND, 95,
of Ann Arbor,
died Dec. 20,
2022.
She was primar-
ily a mother, mother-in-law
and a grandmother. Her love
was expressed through her
cooking, in the cards she sent
with her doodles and art on
the envelopes, through her
songs, even those she wrote to
sing to her dogs, and through
her love of nature and all
things spiritual and godly. But
especially ice cream, butter
pecan and maple walnut fla-
vored, and taking long scenic
rides.
She was a self-taught pia-
nist, who could sight read
absolutely any music; her
mother, although poor, bought
her a piano, slightly broken,
but enough for her to learn
how to play. She was also a
composer, and several of her
compositions were performed.
She was self-supporting with
her music by the age of 16,
when both of her parents had
passed. She was a teacher in
the Detroit Public Schools for
35 years and retired at 72. She
gratefully shared her talents
with so many around her and
with generous abandon.
Mrs. Freedland founded the
preschool music program at
Murray Wright High School
in Detroit, where she impact-
ed innumerable lives of her
students, many of whom had
children in the day care pro-
gram. She introduced singing,
dancing, reading music, pro-

grams, instruments, costumes,
performances and instruments
to them.
Lillian performed through-
out the Detroit area, in many
ensembles, with all types of
musicians and music includ-
ing classical, popular and jazz.
She loved to play for and teach
vocalists. She was secretary
and programming lead for
the Chamber Music Society
of Detroit for decades and
brought her hilarious and fun
ideas to the musical endeav-
ors she was involved in. This
included her nieces, nephews,
great- and great-great nieces
and nephews, and her daugh-
ter, whose first language was
music, and for her grand-
daughter, whom she loved
most of all.
She brought life and joy to
all who met her, had a vast
sense of humor and, although
could not use the computer,
would call the local librarians
to have them locate jokes in
periodicals, news and books
that they would read to her so
that she could type them up.
She would take these with her
everywhere she went and read
them to everyone.
She took pride in caring
for herself and living health-
fully; she walked daily at the
Washtenaw Recreation Center
until she was 92 and was still
living on her own. She was a
marvel at 95 years of age and
will be missed dearly by all
who knew and had the privi-
lege of loving her.
Mrs. Feedland is survived
by her daughter and son-in-
law, Shoshana Mandel and Jan
Warner of Ann Arbor; grand-
daughter, Kayla Mandel; many,
many loving nieces, nephews,
great-nieces, great-nephews,
great-great-nieces, great-great-
nephews, other relatives and
friends.

Lillian was the cherished
sister and sister-in-law of the
late Rose Richman, the late
Hyman and the late Rose Fox,
the late Ted and the late Gert
Fox, the late Paul and the late
Sarah Fox.
