How do you celebrate Chanukah?

EDITED AND COMPILED BY

C

hanukah,
which starts
the evening
of Sunday, Dec. 18, and
runs through Monday, Dec.
26, at night, commemorates
the rededication of the Second
Temple in the second century,
BCE. We tell the story of miracles,
and of a tiny jar of oil that lasted
for eight days. It’s a holiday that
teaches us about the right to be
different, about faith and about
miracles, explains Jodi Gross,

Adat Shalom’s Director of Adult
Learning and Youth Engagement.
Each night of the holiday,
families and friends add one
more candle to the menorah,
filling their homes with light.
“Candles and light are an
important part of Jewish holiday
celebration and Jewish life,”
Gross says. “The Torah, our
values — all bring light to our
lives.” The menorah is also often
placed in a window, so it can be
seen by people passing by.
