BELLA SMITH, 90, of Oak 
Park, died Oct. 6, 2022. 
She is survived by loving 
cousins, Edward and Sue 
Kalkstein, Simon Kalkstein; 
many other treasured relatives, 
close friends and extended 
family at Congregation Beth 
Shalom. 
Mrs. Smith was the dear sis-
ter of the late Karl Smith. 
Contributions may be made

Community Chaplaincy and 
Outreach Program of Jewish 
Senior Life, 6710 W. Maple

Chapel. Interment took place 
at Hebrew Memorial Park.

ANTOINETTE 
“TONI” TANAY, 
M.D. passed away 
peacefully in her 
home Oct. 7, 
2022. 
She was born in 
1928 in Zamosc, 
Poland. She was 
sent to Siberia 
with her par-
ents, Usher and 
Rebecca Hechtkopf, and sister 
Judith, where they spent the 
duration of the war. After the 
war, she attended the Ludwig 
Maximilian Medical School in 
Munich, Germany. She emi-
grated to the United States in 
1951.
Dr. Tanay was a woman of 

great intellect, style and grace, 
a survivor in every sense 
of the word. She loved her 
many friends, flowers, music, 
especially the opera, spoke 
four languages. Her favorite 
pastime was reading Russian 
poetry. 
She was a great supporter 
of the Holocaust Museum 
in West Bloomfield and the 
United States Holocaust 
Memorial Museum in 
Washington, D.C. 
Dr. Tanay is survived by 
her beloved sister, Judith 
Traub (Gerald Traub); her 
daughters, Anita Tanay Hersh, 
(Stephen Hersh) and Elaine 
Tanay (Brian “Mel” Meleski); 
her grandchildren, Aaron 
(Erin Ream), Sara and Jeremy 
Hersh; her great-granddaugh-
ter, Violet Hersh; her niece 
and nephew, Shari Brody 
(Todd Brody) and Jeffrey 

Traub (Marla Traub).
She will be buried next to 
her parents in Israel, near 
Jerusalem. A memorial service 
will be held at a later date.
