O

n Sept. 18, the Art
Center of Battle
Creek presented
an opening reception for
“Remembrance in Action:
Responding to the Holocaust
in Today’s World.” This
program features two
Holocaust-themed exhibits:
“The Holocaust Unfolds:
Reports from the Detroit
Jewish News and Jewish
Chronicle” and “From
Darkness to Light: Mosaics
Inspired by Tragedy.”
“The Holocaust Unfolds”
was created from the Detroit
Jewish News Foundation’s
William Davidson Digital
Archive of Jewish Detroit
History, curated by Mike
Smith, Alene and Graham
Landau Archivist for
the Detroit Jewish News
Foundation.
The exhibit addresses the
events, atrocities and acts
of genocide perpetrated by
Adolf Hitler and his Nazis
as they were reported in
Detroit’s Jewish newspapers

in real time, during an era
when national mainstream
media gave such reports
scant attention. After World
War II, the Nazi atrocities
became universally known as
The Holocaust or the Shoah.
“The Holocaust Unfolds”
first debuted in 2018 at the
Zekelman Holocaust Center
in Farmington Hills.

“From Darkness to Light”
is an exhibition of mosaic
art, created in 2019 by Susan
Ribnick, co-president of
the Austin Mosaic Guild,
Austin, Texas. In response
to the horrific shootings at
the Tree of Life Synagogue in
Pittsburgh on Oct. 27, 2018,
Ribnick decided to reach-out
to artists to create mosaics
with themes ranging from
antisemitism and injustice to
hope, resilience and peace.
Eventually, a double chai
of 36 artists from around
the world contributed to
the exhibit. First displayed
in Austin in 2019, “From
Darkness to Light” traveled
to the Skirball Museum in
Cincinnati, Ohio, and now,
to the Art Center of Battle
Creek.
Michigan’s own Shelley
Jaffe has a mosaic in “From

Holocaust-themed exhibit from the JN Archives
visits Battle Creek.
