I
t’s a mitzvah to hear the shofar! At Pyka
and Evie Schwartz’s house, their zaydie
(grandpa) comes over on Rosh Hashanah
to blow the traditional holiday horn. “My zaydie
says all the prayers, he does the big shofar
blast that lasts in my brain a whole 10 minutes,”
Pyka says. “It’s so cool to watch him do it —
sometimes his face turns bright pink!”
Listen for these blasts at synagogue or
wherever you hear the shofar this Rosh
Hashanah:
• Tekiah — One long, unbroken sound
• Shevarim — Three medium-length broken
sounds
• Teruah — Nine quick, broken sounds
• Tekiah Gedolah — A long, unbroken blast
with a louder ending
One more thing: If you go to synagogue for
the High Holidays, you may notice it looks
a little different. The Torahs are wrapped in
white, the rabbis are dressed in white and the
synagogue is buzzing with energy. There are
lots of new sights and sounds to explore.
Check it out and don’t forget to wish your
fellow congregants, family and friends a
shanah tovah, which means “good year.”
