Did You Know?
Did You Know?

Before you eat your apple dipped in honey, there’s a

blessing many people say:
Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha-olam,
borei p’ri ha-eitz.
We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the
Universe, Creator of the fruit of the tree.
Some people also add, “Ye-hi ratzon she-ti-cha-desh
alei-nu shanah tovah u-metu-kah — “May it be Your
will to renew for us a good and sweet year.”
Chabad.org says the custom goes all the way back
to the Geonic period, which ran from 589-1038 C.E.
Another fun food custom for Rosh Hashanah is
eating a new fruit or a fruit that you haven’t had
recently. Pomegranates are a popular pick. Some
families also choose to taste exotic fruits, such as
rambutans, lychees, starfruit and dragon fruit. The new
fruit reminds us of the newness of the year.
