DOROTHY
SOSKIN
BIENENFELD, 97,
passed away July
28, 2022, in her
home at Moshav
Talmi Yosef, Israel, from
COVID-19.
Dorothy was a determined
and strong-willed person. She
was born in Detroit in the
midst of the Roaring ’20s and
lived through the Depression.
During World War II, she
worked at Chrysler, supporting
tank construction and later
held a number of jobs in retail
and elsewhere. Her moral and
personal views were shaped
by what she saw during those
difficult times, and she never
wavered from her fierce beliefs
in the causes of her generation
or the empathy she held for
others.
The most important job she
felt she had, though, was cre-
ating a warm and safe loving
home for her family. She was
devoted to her husband, Sol;
and being married to him was
the joy of her life. She stayed
at home to raise her three chil-
dren, always supporting them
in their choices and was an
advocate for them throughout
her life.
She loved to go antiquing,
decorating her home with her
finds. She was an adventurous
traveler. Reading was her pas-
sion, and she scoured book-
stores for new finds.
A life-long supporter of Israel,
she moved there in her 90th
year and lived the rest of her
life there, surrounded by family,
who will miss her very much.
Mrs. Bienenfeld was pre-de-
ceased by her husband, Sol;
son, David; and brother, Sam.
She is survived by her daugh-
ter and son-in-law, Paula
Bienenfeld and Emlen Myers;

their children, Sam and David;
daughter and son-in-law, Sheila
(Bienenfeld) Gruber and Ya’acov
Gruber; their children, Seghal,
Asher, Aviv and Smadar; seven
great-grandchildren; her sister,
Gertrude (Soskin) Levin.
A graveside memorial ser-
vice was held Aug. 1, 2022.
Contributions may be made to
South Florida PBS, the Friends
of Magen David Adom or the
Detroit Institute of Arts.

PHYLLIS ANN
CHASSIN, 100,
beloved wife,
mother, grand-
mother and
great-grandmother,
died Aug. 30, 2022. A former
Detroiter, she was a resident of
Rossmoor, Calif., for the past 22
years.
Born Phyllis Kapetansky Nov.
15, 1921, daughter of beloved
Dorothy and Louis Kapetansky
and sister of Seymour, she
graduated Central High School.
She was a secretary and sold
war bonds during WWII. She
corresponded for a year before
marrying Burton L Chassin Feb.
11, 1945.
After the war, they settled in
Buffalo, where son Larry was
born. From there, they moved
back to Detroit, where Lynne
and Sue were born. Phyllis
volunteered in the schools at
lunchtime and recalled helping
to serve Stevie Wonder. In 1963,
they moved to Oak Park.
Family and friends were
her highest priority. She was
a wonderful homemaker and
welcomed everyone; no friend
or family went unfed. Dorothy
moved in with the family for
the latter part of her life, and
grandson Elliot enjoyed her
nurturing when his parents,
Larry and Lexi, became ill.
Phyllis and Burt were long-

time members of Temple Israel,
first in Detroit and then in West
Bloomfield; and they developed
lifelong friendships from the
senior Temple Treasures group.
They moved to Southfield
around 1988 and then to
Rossmoor, Calif., in 2000.
Phyllis took remarkable care of
Burt for years. After 65 years of
marriage, Burt passed in 2010
and soon after Phyllis moved in
with Sue and husband, Rob.
Mrs. Chassin was the loving
mother of the late Lawrence
Chassin (1946-1996) and his
wife, Lexi (1950-1987).
She is survived by her
daughters, Lynne Chassin of
Portland, Ore., Susan Kaplan
and husband, Robert, of
Rossmoor; her grandchildren,
Elliot Chassin, Danielle Chassin
Kelly, Aaron Chassin Kelly
(Joanna), Isaac Kaplan (Rebecca
Hattery-Khan), Tessa Kaplan;
great-grandchildren, Alex, Bella,
