MAXINE
GUTFREUND,
86, died
peacefully on
Aug. 11, 2022, at
her Oak Park
home of 56 years.
She was born on June 20,
1936, in Sharon, Pa., where
she attended elementary
school. Her family moved to
Detroit, and she graduated
from Central High School.
Maxine married her high
school sweetheart, Sander
Gutfreund, moved to Oak
Park 60 years ago and raised
four children, Keith, Jeffrey,
Leslie and Lynn. A fifth
child, Isaac, died in infancy.
She was very proud of her
children and her many
grandchildren.
Maxine was passionate
about her family, her faith

and her Oak Park home and
schools. She led a busy and
fulfilling life, working full
time until her final illness
while also serving as an
elected trustee of the Oak
Park Board of Education.
She was a fierce advocate for
students and teachers and
led many initiatives for the
schools, from raising money
to equipping the band with
instruments and uniforms
to restoring the planetarium.
She still hoped to get the
high school swimming pool
restored and to start school
orchestras.
Maxine was a long-
standing member of the
Isaac Agree Downtown
Synagogue, where the family
attended services for more
than 50 years.
She loved traveling,
learning new things, current
events and politics, relaxing
in her backyard, tending
her garden and observing
hummingbirds, sharing
cooking tips and wisdom,
eating spaghetti, camping in
her popup trailer, listening
to music and square
dancing.
Mrs. Gutfreund is
survived by her sons and
daughters-in-law, Keith and
Myrna Gutfreund, Jeffrey
and Leah Magid, and Leslie
Gutfreund and Eve Stern;
daughter and son-in-law,
Lynn and John Steele;
grandchildren, Ashley
Gutfreund, Max and Marissa
Gutfreund, Jacob Malkin,
Benjamin Malkin, Dena
Malkin, Olivia Gutfreund,
Stephanie and DJ Magid-
Clark, Alana Steel, and
Drake Steel.
She was the beloved
wife of the late Sander J.
