Hilary Duberstein
has moved to the
Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan
(JHSM). For the
past two years,
Duberstein served
as Director of the
Sholem Aleichem
Institute (SAI),
where she earned
a fine reputation
for her warm, enthusiastic
and thoughtful leadership.
Duberstein also maintained
excellent online programming
for SAI during the depths of
the COVID pandemic.
On Aug. 1, Duberstein took
over as program director for
the JHSM, where she will
develop and oversee JHSM
programming, including pub-
lic and private tours, fundrais-
ing events, annual meetings,
lectures, and other virtual and
in-person events.
“I am both honored and
excited to be working with
the wonderful team at JHSM.
I look forward to furthering
JHSM’s mission of providing
educational opportunities that
interpret and high-
light the history of
Jewish Michigan,”
she said. “
As pro-
gram director I look
forward to creating
engaging program-
ming that will help
to further the JHSM
mission.”
The leaders of
the JHSM are also
excited. President Jeannie
Weiner issued a statement that
said, “The lay leadership of
JHSM is delighted to welcome
Hilary Joy Duberstein to the
staff. We have many exciting
and important programs
coming up. Hilary will be
invaluable in bringing them
to life and to the community’s
attention.”
Executive Director
Catherine Cangany, PhD,
added, “What a joy to have
Hilary on our staff! She is
dynamic, creative, enterpris-
ing, and just plain fun. Hilary
has already put some great
programming ideas into
action. Come to an event and
meet her.”

Jewish Family Service of
Metropolitan Detroit received
a highly coveted 4-star rating
from Charity Navigator for
the 10th consecutive year.
With more than 1.5 million
American charities, Charity
Navigator aims to accentu-
ate the work of efficient and
transparent organizations.
The intent of their work is to
provide donors with essential
information to give them
greater confidence in both
the charitable decisions that
they make and the nonprofit
sector.
“Only 4% of the charities
we evaluate have received at
least 10 consecutive 4-star
evaluations, indicating that
Jewish Family Service of
Metropolitan Detroit outper-
forms most other charities
in America,” says Michael
Thatcher, President and CEO
of Charity Navigator. “This
exceptional designation sets
JFS apart from its peers and
demonstrates to the public its
trustworthiness.”
“It’s an honor to serve peo-
ple needing our help,” says
Perry Ohren, CEO of JFS.
“We do this as other people,
able to help, trust us with
their donations. We don’t
do any of this for accolades
but are honored to be recog-
nized.”
