ots of kids
take part in
Hebrew School
enrichment programs
after school, where
they learn about
Jewish tradition and
make even more
new friends. It’s a
chance to explore
Jewish heritage and
culture, explains Rabbi
Menachem Caytak of
Chabad Jewish Center
of Troy. “We have a
fresh start to learn in a

fun and engaging way
what it means to be
Jewish!” he says.
He’s starting a
new Hebrew school
program that will meet
Sunday mornings at
the Chabad Jewish
Center of Troy. The
program, Hebrew
School of the Arts,
will welcome children
and preteens from
Troy, Auburn Hills,
Rochester Hills and
the surrounding areas.

DID YOU KNOW?
When kids start learning the Hebrew
alphabet for the fi
 rst time, there’s a
custom of putting honey on the letters
for the child to enjoy, so that they
associate learning and sweetness. As a
nod to this tradition, some families make
tasty cookies in the shape of Hebrew
letters or Torah scrolls for kids starting
their religious studies.

Hope you have a sweet start to
the school year! And speaking of
honey, Rosh Hashanah is right
around the corner …

Exploring
Jewish Heritage
and Culture

Alana Kandinov,
6, of Troy, will
be taking part
in the new
program. The
rising fi
 rst
grader says she
looks forward
to starting
Hebrew school
and learning about
Jewish holidays as well
as tasting all of the “yummy
food.” What she likes best about
Hebrew school, she says, is the
chance to have fun with new
Jewish friends.
“I am very excited to attend the
Hebrew School of the Arts and
can’t wait until the beginning of
Hebrew School year,” says Alana.
