Back to
School!

I

t’s time to fi
ll your backpack, grab your lunch box
and set your alarm for a new year of learning,
friends and fun. Kids in the U.S. have been going
to school since about the 17th century, with some
49.4 million students estimated in attendance at
public schools across the country as of fall 2021,
according to the National Center for Education
Statistics.
Still, school hasn’t always looked the way it does
today. It started out focused on reading, writing
and mathematics, with mostly boys in attendance.
Only some kids went to school, especially those
preparing for specifi
c jobs in ministry or law. The
push for broader education came about after the
American Revolution, when people started thinking
of education as a way to build better citizens.
Flash forward to today. Schools now of
 er
everything from math to reading and writing, science,
social studies, technology, languages, art, music,
physical education and more. There’s a lot to do at
school, with extra-curriculars that can include sports
and robotics, dance, chess and yoga.
Meanwhile, as you get ready to sharpen your
colored pencils and crack open fresh notebooks,
across the community, family, friends and community
organizations are working hard to make sure
everyone has what they need to make their school
year a success.
