B

ruce Keil Wayne died
Aug. 2, 2022, at 91 in
Cary, N.C., where he lived
with his wife, Denise, since 2011.
He was born in Detroit in 1931
and lived in the Metro Detroit
area for most of his life. He and
his family always
considered Bruce
to be the original
Batman, since he was
born before the first
Batman comic book
was printed (Bruce
Wayne was the civil-
ian name of Batman).
He took this role very
seriously, especially
after the Batman television show
first aired in the 1960s. His black
PT Cruiser had a Batman steer-
ing wheel cover, and he wore a
Batman watch for many years. He
would bring out his Batman cos-
tume and wear it whenever the
mood struck, and he had a large
Batman doll sitting on the living
room sofa to keep him company.
His daughters, Nancy Wayne
and Karen Klausmeyer, grew up
as his Batgirls and were delighted
that their father had become a
celebrity because of his name.
Unlike the dark movie version of
Batman, Bruce Keil Wayne was
a lighthearted and jolly version
of Batman who liked a good joke
and a good laugh.
Aside from his role as Batman-
About-Town, Bruce contributed
to the Metro Detroit area in very
concrete ways. The apartments
he helped build still stand and are
home to hundreds of people. He
was known for hiring local guys
hanging around the HUD proj-
ects he was building and giving
them a skill that they could use
afterward.
After he retired from the build-
ing business, he became a popular
and successful tutor as a volunteer
at Mayberry Elementary School
in Detroit. He was the beloved

Mr. Batman to the kids — and
a whiz at teaching them reading
and math.
He seemed to know just about
everyone around town and even
used to play pickup basketball
with some of the Pistons at the
Jewish Community
Center. His family
and friends were
surprised when he
and Denise decided
to move from the
Detroit area —
their home of more
than 70 years — to
North Carolina,
where they knew
absolutely no one.
True to form, Bruce made
friends quickly in their retirement
community in Cary, N.C., where
he joined many clubs and activity
groups, including tennis, ping-
pong, bridge, musical theater, a
current events discussion group
and more. Nobody in the family
knew that he could carry a tune
until he joined the musical the-
ater group at the age of 85.
He remained active, continuing
to play tennis until last year and,
at 88, he was the North Carolina
State Basketball Free Throw
Champion in his age group. Sadly,
bum knees long plagued him and
intractable bladder cancer finally
stopped him; but he fought death
until the end.
He will be missed by his many
friends and family. He is survived
by his wife of 63 years, Denise
Nelson Wayne; his daughters,
Nancy Wayne (Greg Miller) and
Karen Klausmeyer; grandchil-
dren, Kyle Anne Wayne Colwell,
Allison Hope Wayne Colwell,
Bryan Keil Klausmeyer, Jason
Wayne Klausmeyer (Shawdai);
and great-granddaughter, Avery
Klausmeyer.
Memorial services in Cary and
the Metro Detroit area will be
announced soon.
