JFS Receives Grant

Jewish Family Service 
of Metropolitan Detroit 
received a grant from the 
Ben Teitel Philanthropic 
Fund at the United Jewish 
Foundation of Metro 
Detroit. This investment 
will allow JFS to support the 
community’s older adults 
and family caregivers.
According to AARP, 69% 
of older adults have chronic 
diseases and need help with 
daily activities as they age. 
This creates a significant risk 
of burn-out for their family 
caregivers who struggle 

with finding resources for 
assistance and respite. 
“This gift will allow us to 
hire someone dedicated to 
launching a new program,” 
says Yuliya Gaydayenko, 
Chief Program Officer, 
Older Adults. “This social 
worker will identify areas 
where family caregivers need 
help, provide resources and 
offer ongoing support. We 
expect to serve 100 family 
caregivers annually, with 
the goal of enhancing their 
ability to care for themselves 
and their loved ones and 

decreasing their stress and 
anxiety.”
The Teitel grant will also 
support the transportation 
program and emergency 
financial assistance for home 
care services.
“We are so appreciative 
of the generosity of the 
Ben Teitel Philanthropic 
Fund at the United Jewish 
Foundation of Metro 
Detroit,” says Gaydayenko. 
“This donation will allow us 
to improve the quality of life 
for over 500 older adults who 
are aging in place.” 

Harriet and Ben Teitel. Mr. Teitel 
died in 1985, leaving most of 
his money to charitable funds to 
assist Jewish people in Michigan 
and Israel, including the Harriett 
& Ben Teitel Jewish Senior Life 
Apartments in Oak Park.
