Cooking With History

The Zekelman
Holocaust Center
(The HC) will host
the virtual cooking
class “Cooking with
History: Remembering
the Holocaust through
Family Recipes” on July
14 at 7 p.m.
 Becca Gallick-Mitchell is
a third-generation Holocaust
educator, recipe developer,
blogger and founder of the
InstaGrandma’s Kitchen website
and Instagram page and will
be leading the virtual cooking

class via a Zoom link and
broadcast.
Gallick-Mitchell will
demonstrate how to make
her great-grandmother
Ester Weintraub’s Kopytka
(Polish potato dumplings)
and mushroom gravy.
While cooking, she shares
stories of Mala Dorfman, her
grandmother who survived
the war, and Ester, her great-
grandmother who perished. The
overarching themes of Gallick-
Mitchell’s programs focus on
the significance of bridging

generations and cultures while
emphasizing the importance of
fighting hatred with love and
kindness.
“Becca has truly carried on the
legacy of her grandmother and
great-grandmother through the
art of cooking and storytelling,”
said Liz Pingtella, events and
public relations coordinator at
The HC. “She demonstrates that
while these family recipes feed
our bodies, it’s really their stories
that nourish the soul, inspiring
us all to be better versions of
ourselves.”
 Program sponsors for the
event are Eric Billes, Robin and

Leo Eisenberg, Patricia and
Daniel Frank, Garry Kappy,
Fay and Leon Siegel, Janelle
Konstam and Stuart Teger, and
Elana and Abraham Varkovitzky.
The Community Partner is
Oakland Community College,
Culinary Studies Institute.
Registration for “Cooking
with History: Remembering
the Holocaust through Family
Recipes” is available at www.
holocaustcenter.org/July.
The class will be held as a
virtual event on Zoom. A
confirmation email will be sent
with an ingredient list upon
registration.

Mitchell
