B

arry Kadans, 83, of West
Bloomfield, passed away
on May 2, 2022.
He was born in Washington,
D.C., and moved to Detroit when
he was 13 years old. Following his
graduation from Wilbur Wright
High School, Barry opened a
used car lot, Bargain
Lot, on Livernois in
the 1960s. He was also
an active builder in
Michigan from 1965
until his death.
Barry was always an
adventurous kid and
was so excited and
proud to join the Navy
in 1957. He loved
telling stories about
his time in the Navy, the jobs he
had, including firefighter, security
guard and personal driver to the
base commander. He loved every
minute of the Navy and expressed
a desire to join up today.
His true passion in life was
flying. Barry got his pilot’s license
in 1963 after seeing an ad in
the Detroit News for skydiving at
Romeo Airport. It was too windy
for skydiving; instead, he was
offered a flight lesson. And so
began his lifelong love affair with
aviation. He purchased his first
plane in 1971; and with his bold
and courageous spirit, his pilot’s
license and his airplane, Barry’s
world opened even more, giving
him the opportunity to meet
many wonderful people, includ-
ing some of his aviation heroes.
In 2018, Barry was awarded
the Wright Brothers’ Master Pilot
Award in recognition of his dedi-
cated service, technical expertise,
professionalism and many out-
standing contributions to further-
ing the cause of aviation safety. A
pilot must have flown 50 years or
more to be eligible for this award.
Barry loved last-minute travel
plans and spontaneity, but he also

loved his afternoon routine of
swimming and working out at the
JCC. Over the years, it allowed
him to develop friendships with
people from various backgrounds
and walks of life.
Barry had a special way of
connecting with people; often it
would start by simply
asking a person about
the origin of their
name. As the con-
versation progressed,
barriers fell and Barry
made a friend to the
end. He used this
approach with his
doctors, nurses, recep-
tionists and radiation
technicians, leaving
behind smiles and laughs for the
care providers.
Barry passed away after a year-
long battle with glioblastoma. He
never complained though he had
much he could complain about.
He was positive throughout his
life and it continued over the past
year. His caregivers remarked
how they had never helped a per-
son as ill as Barry and not hear
any complaints.
He was the cherished father
of Alison Kadans, Jeffrey and
Jennifer Kadans, and Mark
Kadans; adored grandpa of Sarah
and Jacob Kadans; loving com-
panion and best friend of Julie
Shull; beloved “stepdad” to Julie’s
children, Jeffrey and Lynne Shull;
devoted son of the late Joseph
and the late Rose Kadans. He was
predeceased by his cousin and
dear friend, Ronald Rossen.
Interment was at Hebrew
Memorial Park. Contributions
may be to Jewish Hospice &
Chaplaincy Network, 6555
W
. Maple, West Bloomfield,
MI 48322, jewishhospice.org;
or to a charity of one’s choice.
