I

rving Yale Strickstein, 93,
of Detroit and Deerfield
Beach, Fla., died Feb. 2,
2021.
He was born Jan. 30, 1928,
in Toledo, Ohio. A graduate
of Central High School, 1946,
Irv served his country in the
U.S. Navy aboard the heavy
cruisers USS Toledo and USS
Oregon City.
Following naval service, Irv
entered the lumber industry as
a yard man, unloading boxcars
and driving a forklift, learning
the construction indus-
try from the ground up.
The post-war construc-
tion boom in Michigan
was in full swing. In
1954, he joined National
Lumber Company and
built it into the leading
lumber supplier for
the Detroit metro-
politan area; it was a
Crain Detroit Business Top 200.
National supplied material for
tens-of-thousands of houses,
apartments and condomini-
ums, creating homes for
generations of families in the
tri-state area.
Irv was a dedicated
motor-yachtsman, operating
numerous vessels ranging
in size from cruiser (Irv’s
Pussycat) to motor-yacht
(Lady Lumber). Cruising
in the company of family
and friends was his great-
est pleasure in life. No
part of the Great Lakes’
waterways was unknown
to him and, in later years,
the Bahamas, Caribbean
and Antilles. Beginning in
2000, he achieved a lifelong
dream: a voyage of the Great
American Waterway, encom-
passing: the Atlantic coast,
New York Harbor, Hudson

River, Erie Canal, Great
Lakes, Ohio and Mississippi
rivers, Gulf of Mexico and
the Florida Keys.
In service to the com-
munity, Irv was a generous
benefactor to multiple
Detroit charities and to
Congregation B’nai Moshe,
where he was a longtime
member and served on the
board of directors.
Mr. Strickstein is survived
by his daughter, Susan J.
Sadley of Royal Oak; son and
daughter-in-law,

and Deborah Foon
of Bloomfield
Hills; son and son-

ter, Blanch Rich (Strickstein);
