A Notable Entertainer
M

ichael Jacobson of
West Bloomfield
died peacefully at
his home on Sunday, June 14,
2020, at the age of 76.
 Michael grew up in and
around the entertainment
industry as his family owned
many theaters in the Detroit
area. Michael
graduated from
Detroit’
s Mumford
High School in
1961; and, at age 17,
he signed a record-
ing contract with
20th Century Fox
Records and moved
to New York City.
Under the
stage name Mike
Sheldon, he record-
ed his debut single, “Oh You
Beautiful Doll,
” with producer
Ray Ellis. He went on to share
the stage with entertainers
including Tony Bennett, Jerry
Lewis, and Mr. Ed (the talking
horse).
In 1965, Michael returned
to Michigan and married his
childhood sweetheart, Harriet,
who grew up just a couple
blocks away from Michael
on York Road in Huntington
Woods. As legend would have
it, the first time Michael saw
Harriet, he was looking out
his bedroom window when
she walked by; he announced,
“That’
s the girl I’
m going to
marry!”
Michael and Harriet were
married for 54 years. They
settled in West Bloomfield
and raised their son, Matthew.
As a child, Matthew followed
in his father’
s entertainment
footsteps as a magician and,
like his dad, moved to New
York at 17 to attend university.
With Matthew out of the
house and calls still coming in

for a magician, Michael picked
up his son’
s tricks and spent
the next 30 years performing
thousands of magic shows for
children, adults, private par-
ties and corporate events.
Michael’
s magic shows
entertained audiences in tem-
ples, synagogues and Jewish
organizations, including ORT,
Hadassah, National
Council of Jewish
Women, Chabad
House, JET Theater
and the Jewish
Community Center.
Notably, Michael
was a longstanding
member of Britain’
s
Magic Circle, the
Society of American
Magicians and
the International
Brotherhood of Magicians.
He was also a substance
abuse prevention specialist
and would incorporate that
background into his magic
shows at schools, camps and
community centers. Michael
received the Governor’
s Award
from the Michigan Senate for
his achievements as an enter-
tainer.
Anyone who knew Michael
personally was aware of his
love for animals of every kind.
A vegetarian since the late
’
70s, Michael would go out
of his way to protect animals,
and he rescued hundreds
of cats and other creatures
throughout his lifetime.
Michael Jacobson is sur-
vived by his wife, Harriet; son
and daughter-in-law, Matthew
Jacobson and Leigh Jurecka;
grandson Levi.
The funeral was held at
Clover Hill Park Cemetery. To

cats in Michael’
s memory, visit
