A Patron of The Arts

L

ila Silverman, 86, of
Bloomfield Hills, passed
away peacefully (non-
COVID) at home on May
7, 2020, after a courageous,
12-year battle with cancer.
She was born on July 25,
1933, in Detroit, the daugh-
ter of Mary and Morris
Smith. She married Gilbert
B. Silverman in 1962, and
together they went on a grand
and beautiful adventure of
collecting art and repairing the
world.
Passionate and visionary
collectors of modern art, Lila
and Gil left an indelible mark
on many art institutions,
including the Museum of
Modern Art in New York,
Detroit Institute of Arts and
the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
They donated their unpar-
alleled Fluxus Collection to
MoMA in 2008; after Gil’
s
passing, Lila also donated
to MoMA the Gilbert and
Lila Silverman Instruction
Drawings Collection, which
includes iconic works by John
Cage, Yoko Ono and Robert
Rauschenberg.
Equally generous with
her time and wisdom, Lila
served as a member of
MoMA
’
s Trustee Committee
on Archives, Library and
Research; as an honorary
trustee of MoMA; a found-
ing member of the Visiting
Committee for European
Sculpture and Decorative
Arts of the Detroit Institute
of Arts and as the chair of
the DIA
’
s Friends of Modern
and Contemporary Art
Committee.
A steadfast mentor to count-
less artists and individuals
she encountered in her travels

across the world
and during her life-
long involvement in
the Detroit commu-
nity, Lila was a com-
mitted supporter of
so many social jus-
tice and charitable
causes. She was a
founding trustee of
the Jewish Women’
s
Foundation of Metropolitan
Detroit; she served on the
board of directors of DMC
Foundation, chaired both the
Doreen and David Hermelin
Breast Imaging Center at the
Karmanos Cancer Institute
and the Sommerset Imaging
Center at the Karmanos
Cancer Institute, and she
served as the co-chair of the
Alexander Walt Breast Center
at the Karmanos Cancer
Institute.
As a lifetime member of the
League of Women Voters and
a fierce supporter of Planned
Parenthood, Lila was also a
founding member of EMILY’
s
list, Michigan and served on
the Committee for Midtown
Economic Development. She
was also an honorary board
member of Greening of
Detroit.
Lila had impeccable taste
in fashion, gave fabulously
elegant parties and organized
people and trips to far-flung
locations like no one else
could.
She was a loving and proud
mother and grandmother,
who displayed her grandsons’

school assignments alongside
priceless art in her homes,
never missed a chance to make
a silver dollar pancake break-
fast for her grandchildren at
the family home in Vermont

or to show off her
granddaughter’
s violin
playing. She remained
strong, opinionated,
beautiful and gra-
cious.
Beloved wife of
54 years of the late
Gilbert B. Silverman,
Lila is survived by her
sons, Eric (Svetlana)
Silverman and Paul (Jennifer)
Silverman; loving Nana to
Katarina Silverman, Aleksia
Silverman, Eliana Silverman,
Nathan Silverman and Levi
Silverman. She is also survived
by Gilbert’
s children: Marsha
(Tom) Brunelle, Wendy
(Mitch Master) Silverman,
Gilbert B. (“Buzz”) Silverman
Jr.; and former daughter-in-
law, Jan Silverman; Gilbert’
s
grandchildren, Jessica (Sarah
Thornton) Silverman, Lesley
Silverman, Michael Silverman
and Cynthia (Chris) Brunelle
Cifrino; Gilbert’
s great-grand-
daughter, Cora Cifrino; her
loving extended family and
caregivers, as well as her loving
companion, Tiger V
.
She was the loving sister of
the late Gloria Wagner; devot-
ed daughter of the late Morris
and the late Mary Smith.

Park Cemetery. Contributions
