DR. MORTON 
RABAN, 79, of 
West Bloomfield, 
died Feb. 12, 
2020. 
Mort was born 
in St. Louis, Mo., went to and 
graduated Harvard ’
62 with 
an A.B. in history of science, 
then to Princeton for a Ph.D. 
(1967) in chemistry. 
He was a professor of 
organic chemistry at Wayne 
State University in Detroit for 
35 years. He won the French 
medal Palmes Academiques 
as an officer. He also started 
and ran an exchange pro-
gram with the Grand Ecole 
ESCIL in Lyon, France, and at 
Wayne State. 
Dr. Raban was a visiting 
professor in Russia, Poland, 
China and at the Weitzmann 
Institute in Rehovot, Israel. 
His best friend and colleague 
was the Israeli Dani Kost, 
professor of chemistry at 
Ben-Gurion University in 
Beersheva, Israel. 
Mort, Diane and his chil-
dren spent much time in 
Israel and nearby environs, 
including climbing Mt. Sinai 
to see the sun rise. During 
his sabbaticals in Lyon, his 
children attended a French/
English speaking school while 
the adults explored the won-
derful cuisine of that area.
More recently, Mort and 
Diane were volunteers at the 
Detroit Institute of Arts for 
25 years (having met at the 
DIA), the Michigan Opera 
Theatre; and they attended 
many chamber music and 
symphony concerts. Diane 
was his wife of 30 years (shy 
one month); they were best 
friends. She referred to them 
as “one person.” She and his 
family will miss him greatly.
Dr. Raban is survived 

by his beloved wife, Diane 
Raban; son and daughter-
in-law, Dr. David and Dr. 
Olivia Raban; daughter 
and son-in-law, Alison and 
Jordan Pomaville; stepchil-
dren, Jennifer Fitzpatrick 
and Matthew Clark (the late 
Miriam Braunstein); grand-
children, Rosemary Bostek 
and Sid Bostek; sister and 
brother-in-law, Rosemary and 
Alan Lichtman; brother-in-
law and sister-in-law, Thomas 
and Pamela Gustairs; many 
other loving relatives, col-
leagues and friends. 
He was the devoted son of 
the late Samuel and the late 
Viola Raban.

GILDA 
RUDNER, 94, of 
Commerce 
Township, died 
Feb. 17, 2020. 
She is survived 
by her daughter, Lori Rubin; 
loving grandchildren, Scott 
Rubin, Matt Harb, Chad 
Rubin and Lukas Harb; son-
in-law, James Harb; many 
other loving family members 
and friends. 
Mrs. Rudner was the 
beloved wife of the late 
Mickey Rudner; the dear sis-
ter of the late Avery Warnick; 
the mother-in-law of the late 
Andy Rubin; the mother of 
the late Shellee Rudner Harb. 
Interment took place at 
Adat Shalom Memorial 
Park Cemetery in Livonia. 
Contributions may be made 
to a charity of one’
s choice.
