BERTHA
GREEN, 100, of
Oak Park, died
Dec. 6, 2019,
nine days before
her 101st
birthday.
Born in Pittsburgh during
the Great Depression, she
was the youngest of six
children. As a girl, she
never had a doll or a toy
and had to quit school at
16 because her family could
not afford bus fare.
That difficult start paved
the way to the love of her
life. As a teenager, Bertha
worked at Kresge’
s Dime
Store. Her work friend
invited her to a Halloween
party, where she met and
fell in love with Jack Green.
The couple went on to raise
four children in Southfield:
Joyce (Paul Thurman),
Geraldine (Robert
Saunders), Anita (David
Helfman) and Ronald.
Bertha loved spending time
with her grandchildren,
Paul Thurman, Rebecca
Thurman (Bill Kline),
Stephanie (David Shaw),
Richard Weiss and Aaron
Weiss. She was incredibly
proud of her great-
grandchildren, Ashley
Kline, Christopher and
Patrick Shaw, and Evan
Lowry.
Throughout her life,
Bertha had a love of having
fun. In her younger years,
she enjoyed travel and
getting dressed up on
Saturday nights. She learned
how to drive when she was
32 (which was a big surprise
to Jack at the time).
As a senior citizen, she
enjoyed playing cards and
bingo and had an alter-ego,
Bubbles the Clown, who
entertained children and
“old people” at the Jewish
Community Center.
Bertha loved arts
and crafts and fashion

magazines. Her
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren could always
count on her for a Faygo
Red Pop, big red-lipstick
kisses and, if they asked
nicely, she would peel an
apple in one long, glorious
ribbon.
Bertha passed away with
a drawer full of M&Ms,
a closet full of too many
cute winter coats and the
abounding love of her
family and friends.
Heartfelt thanks go to the
nursing staff at Beaumont/
Royal Oak Hospital, who
provided exceptional and
compassionate care during
the last part of her life.
Bertha was the youngest
and last of six children and
is survived by many dear
nieces and nephews.
Contributions may be
made to American Cancer
Society, 20450 Civic Center
Drive, Southfield, MI 48076;
or to Jewish Senior Life,
15000 W. 10 Mile Road,
Prentis Building, Oak Park,
MI 48237. Interment was
held at Hebrew Memorial
Park. Arrangements by
Hebrew Memorial Chapel.

RITA
KEYWELL, 88,
of West
Bloomfield, died
Nov. 27, 2019.
The daughter
of Minnie and Morris
Canvasser, she was married
for more than 51 years to
Jerome Keywell.
She is survived by her
children, Synde Keywell,
Denise (Fred) Kalt, Karen
(Dr. Robert) Hellman and
Gayle (Charles) Lichtman;
grandchildren, Gregory
(Carly) Hellman, Emily
Hellman, Matthew Kalt
(fiancee, Lindsay Singer),
Brooke Lichtman and
Jordan Lichtman; nieces and
