When You’re Hot
M

any of us enjoy the
summer weather
when things heat
up. Others prefer to vacation
in a hot clime when local
weather is cold. However, the
high tempera-
tures are not the
only reference
to heat we hear
in everyday
talk.
Theatergoers
are familiar
with Tennessee
Williams’
Cat on a Hot Tin
Roof. This expression has
also been used to describe
any precarious situation.
With dwindling interest in
newspapers, the expression
“hot off the press” is becom-

ing dated. But media report-
ers are often hot on the trail
of stories.
In trouble at home? At
work? Socially? Realizing
this, you may not feel so hot.
No one likes being put in the
hot seat; the electric chair is
another meaning altogether.
In hot pursuit of a business
opportunity, you want to
strike while the iron is hot.
If you are not so hot with
figures, however, drop any
related venture like a hot
potato. If you think you have
a hot tip as to investments,
be sure to investigate thor-
oughly before committing so
you do not find yourself in
hot water.
It is very hard to main-

tain a friendship with
someone who con-
stantly runs hot and
cold; keeping track
of his moods is diffi-
cult. You may want to
drop this person like a
hot brick.
If you have a hot
date, make sure that
you look hot; first impres-
sions are important.
So many of our politicians
of late are hard to take seri-
ously because they are full of
hot air; they are convinced
that they are hot stuff.
It is reassuring to know
that troubled folks may call
a hotline for help; these con-
nections are great at saving
lives.

To conclude, I recall
advice given me once to the
effect of not letting kids use
a sauna. (What I was told
was, “Don’
t sweat the small
stuff.”)
