TZVI
(HAROLD
ALLAN)
BERKAL, 84,
left us on Dec. 6,
2019, after a
lengthy battle with
idiopathic pulmonary
fibrosis.
Born on Feb. 7, 1935,
in Winnipeg, Manitoba,
to Abe and Hilda Berkal,
he was extremely lucky to
join Habonim Canada and
participate in the Second
Habonim Israel Workshop
in 1952, where he met his
Zionist counterpart, Gerry
Barish.
After a lengthy stay in
the Holy Land, he returned
to Winnipeg but could not
stay apart from the love
of his life. Leaving behind
his family, including his
surviving brother, Arky
Berkal (Bev), Tzvi moved to
Detroit in 1954 and finally
convinced Ms. Barish to
take his hand in marriage,
forming a bond lasting for
more than half a century.
An educator, administrator
and businessman, he
moved through all circles
of business and social
activity with grace, leaving
a lasting impression on
those encountered. He will
be remembered as a man
who could always make you
feel as though you were the
most important person in
the room. His smile and
largesse will be missed by
all who had the pleasure of
his company, counsel and
warmth.
He was blessed to have
spent 64 years of his
life in marriage to his
beloved Gerry. Their three
children, Steven (Leslye),
David (Kimberly) and
Susan, together with five
grandchildren, Rachel,
Jacob, Taryn, Emma and
Megan, will miss their
Dad and Zayda with full
hearts, having spent many
wonderful years in his
calming influence. Their
memories remain full of
unending hugs, unyielding
support, knowing winks
and much sought after belly
laughs.
