Traveling the World
with the Technion

M

y husband, Larry, and I
joined last fall’
s Technion
World Tour China, follow-
ing my participation in American
Technion Society (ATS) missions
in 2017 to New York and in 2016 to
Israel.
The 2017 and 2018 trips included
tours of two of the Technion-Israel
Institute of Technology’
s most ambi-
tious institutional collaborations. One
is the New York’
s Jacobs Technion-
Cornell Institute, which combines

Israel’
s innovation, entrepreneurship
and applied research abilities with
Cornell University’
s reputation in
engineering and computer science.
The other is the Guangdong Technion
Israel Institute of Technology
(GTIIT), the first Israeli universi-
ty campus in China, a partnership
with the Guangdong Province, the
Shantou Municipal Government, the
Chinese government, the Li Ka-shing
Foundation and Shantou University.
I am a second-generation Technion

NCJW Needs Volunteers to Fill Students’
Backpacks

Volunteers will soon begin filling
backpacks with age-appropriate
school supplies to help 1,500 home-
less and low-income children in
Oakland County, thanks to a pro-
gram which has been operated by
National Council of Jewish Women,
Michigan (NCJW|MI) since 1997.
On Sunday, July 21, at 10 a.m.
volunteers will gather at Hillel Day
School (32200 Middlebelt Road,
Farmington Hills) to unpack the
backpacks and the various supplies
to be placed inside them. Then on
Monday, July 22, at 10 a.m. volun-
teers will meet to stock each back-
pack with the correct supplies.
Volunteers of all ages are needed
for both events, with no registration

required; students taking part can
receive community service credit.
“Our backpacks help alleviate
some of the stress associated with
going back to school for local chil-
dren in need and their parents,”
said Jennifer LoPatin, president of
NCJW|MI, a social advocacy and
grassroots volunteer organization
which has been operating in Metro
Detroit for 128 years.
In addition to the backpacks, fam-
ilies in need will also be provided
with vouchers to NCJW|MI’
s council
re|sale shop for back to school cloth-
ing. In the 2017-2018 school year,
there were 2,208 homeless students
in Oakland County, with 63 percent
of those students needing school
