JESSIE COHEN JN INTERN

One-of-a-Kind

O

ver the past 27 years,
Judaica artist Orna
Amrani has become a
staple of Michigan summer art
fairs.
Amrani is originally from
Haifa, Israel, and attended
University of Haifa before
serving in the Israeli Air Force.
After having lived all over the
world with her husband, Ami,
the couple and their three chil-
dren settled in Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla., where Amrani first devel-
oped her unique artistic tech-
nique for preserving Jewish
artifacts.
The technique was invented
by Amrani herself, and now, 30
years later, she is still the only
one to use it. It involves mixing
parchment and clay and then
baking the piece at a very high
temperature to preserve the
document.
Because of the nature of her
artwork, Amrani shows her
pieces almost exclusively at art
shows.
“All my pieces are handmade
and unique; they cannot be
mass-produced,” she said. “I
have shown at galleries here and
there, but mostly art shows.”
Amrani has shown at fairs all
over the country, including fairs
in Chicago, Texas and Ohio, but is
starting to slow down and do less
traveling. However, she will con-
tinue to make her yearly trips to
Michigan.
Amrani spends many of her sum-
mers in the area doing art shows
and has a home in Keego Harbor
where she stays during this time.
The artist says she loves showing
in Michigan because the Jewish

community here is so supportive.
“The Michigan Jewish community
is amazing,” Amrani said. “And not
just the Jewish community. I love
the people here; they are so sup-
portive. My art is hanging in many
homes here.”
This summer, Amrani will be
showing at multiple art fairs in
Michigan including Royal Oak’
s
Arts, Beats and Eats (Aug. 30-Sept.
2), Birmingham’
s Common Ground
Art Show (Sept. 14-15) and Ann
Arbor’
s Summer Art Fair (July
18-21), which she has been attend-
ing for more than 25 years. ■
