ROLLING THUNDER
ROLLS AGAIN
In 1974-75, Bob Dylan, now 78, toured
the country with many other musicians.
The Rolling Thunder Revue, as it was
called, was heavily filmed
because Dylan intended
to use the footage in an
upcoming fictional movie
called Renaldo and Clara.
The film (1978) got pretty
bad reviews. However, the
footage was invaluable to
Martin Scorsese, who is the
director of a new documen-
tary (Rolling Thunder: A Bob
Dylan Story) that premiered
on Netflix on Wednesday,
June 12. It features brand-
new interviews with Dylan
and Joan Baez, now 78,
who played with Dylan on
the whole Rolling Thunder
tour. Baez was Dylan’
s girl-
friend from 1962-65 and
did much to help make him
a star.
Also on the whole tour
was Ramblin’
 Jack Elliott,
now 87. Born Elliott Adnopoz
in Brooklyn, he headed out
West as a young man and
became Woody Guthrie’
s
longtime musical sidekick.
Guthrie and Elliott were big
early Dylan influences. The
poet Allen Ginsberg (1926-
1997) sometimes joined the
tour; an old interview he did
about the tour is in the film.

AT THE MOVIES

Late Night, a comedy/drama, opens
Friday, June 14, at the Landmark
Theater in Royal Oak and the Maple
Theater in Bloomfield Township. It
stars Emma Thompson as Katherine
Newbury, the longtime host of a pop-
ular network entertainment talk show.
Newbury’
s whole writing team is male,
and she’
s attacked in the press as a
“woman-hating woman.” In response,
she hires Molly Patel, a writer without
much of a resume (Mindy Kaling). This
hire doesn’
t stop criticism that Newbury
is an out-of-touch dinosaur and her
ratings fall. Newbury asks her writers to

make her more relevant again and Patel
takes up that challenge. The large sup-
porting cast includes Max Casella, 51
(his father is Jewish); Ike Barinholtz,
42; Halston Sage, 26; and Broadway
musical star Marc Kudisch, 52.
Opening the same day at the
Landmark Theater is Framing DeLorean,
a documentary about
John DeLorean (1925-
2005), the famous auto
executive who worked at
GM and later headed the
short-lived DeLorean car
company. There are many
dramatic re-enactments
in the film. Adam Baldwin
plays Delorean and Josh
Charles, 47, plays Bill
Collins, an engineer who
designed the DeLorean
car. Also dramatized is
(real-life) attorney Howard
Weitzman, now 77, who
led the legal team that
successfully defended
DeLorean on charges of
cocaine trafficking. (Also
available the same day on
most pay-per-view stream-
ing services).
Opening June 18 at
the Maple Theater is the
documentary 93Queen. Set
in the Chasidic enclave in
Borough Park, Brooklyn, it
follows Rachel “Ruchie”
Freier, a no-nonsense
Chasidic lawyer and moth-
er of six who wants to
shake up the “boys club”
in her Chasidic community.
She does this by creating
the first all-female ambu-
lance corps in New York City.

FAMOUS FAMILY TOURS

Sarah Jessica Parker, 54, and her
husband, Matthew Broderick, 57,
toured Israel for a week starting on May
31. They were accompanied by their
son James, 16, and their twin girls,
Marion and Tabitha, 9. Parker’
s late
father was Jewish as was Broderick’
s
late mother. Both were raised secular
but identify as “culturally” Jewish.
According to Parker, Broderick has
always been very interested in Jewish
history and has spent considerable time
studying it. ■
