Jewish Community Relations
Council/AJC (JCRC/AJC)
will honor Howard Brown
with its 2019 Activist Award
on Monday, May 20, at
Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills. A strolling
dinner will begin at 6 p.m.,
followed at 7 p.m. by the award
presentation and a conversation titled
“Surviving Social Media: Interfaith
Engagement in the Digital Age” with
the evening’
s featured speakers Yair
Rosenberg, senior writer at Tablet
Magazine, and attorney, author and
podcast host Rabia Chaudry. The
evening ends with a dessert reception.
A JCRC/AJC board member since
2006 who has long worked under the
radar applying quiet diplomacy, Brown
is being honored for his bridge-building
efforts among different interfaith
groups, including strengthening the
relationship between the Southeast
Michigan Jewish and Muslim

communities.
Professionally, the Franklin
resident has worked as a chief
executive with experience in
technology, fundraising, sales and
marketing of online software and
digital communications solutions.
The Wexner Heritage
Foundation Fellowship alumnus
has served as AJC Detroit regional
board president as well as on the
global organization’
s National Board
of Governors and as a Comay Fellow.
He also was on the boards of Hebrew
Free Loan, JCC of Metropolitan Detroit
and Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
Sponsorship and tribute levels begin
at $180, including a strolling dinner
and dessert reception. The program
only is a $36 contribution and includes

Temple Israel in West Bloomfield is
kicking off a new speaker series titled
“The Many Shades of Politics — An
American Journey,
” representing
voices across the American political
spectrum. The goal is to encourage
thoughtful dialogue about important
issues of our time.

An Evening with Jeffrey Toobin”
takes place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday,
May 21. He will speak on “
Analyzing
Politics, Media and the Law.
” A book
signing will follow the free event. A
patron-only pre-glow begins at 6 p.m.
A senior analyst for CNN and staff
writer for The New Yorker, Toobin has

provided analysis on some of the most
provocative and important events of
our time.
