NETFLIX CATCH-UP AND LOOK AHEAD
Larry Charles’
 Dangerous World of
Comedy, a four-part series, began
streaming on Netflix on
Feb. 15. Larry Charles, 62,
wrote or co-wrote many
Seinfeld scripts. He became
somewhat famous when he
directed the hit films Borat
and Bruno, both starring
Sacha Baron Cohen, now
47. In his Netflix series, he
travels around the world
and finds comedy in unlike-
ly places: Iraq, Nigeria,
Somalia and Saudi Arabia.
By the way, while research-
ing this item, I found out
that Charles grew up in
“Trump Village.” It is a sev-
en-building Brooklyn apart-
ment complex near Coney
Island named after Fred
Trump, Donald’
s father (Fred
built it in 1963). It would
be amusing if Charles went
into the “wilds of Brooklyn”
and interviewed current
residents about how they
feel about living in “Trump
Village.” Certainly fodder for
a lot of jokes.
 Premiering on Feb.
22 on Netflix is the
The Photographer of
Mauthausen, a feature film
about Francesc Boix, a
Catalan photographer who
managed to survive the
Mauthausen Nazi concen-
tration camp. He was able
to take 2,000 photos inside
the camp and successfully
hid the negatives. These
negatives played a decisive
role in the Nuremburg trials.
After the fascists won the
Spanish Civil War in 1939,
tens of thousands who sup-
ported the Republic (most
Catalans did) fled to France.
Boix and thousands of other
refugees from Spain were
arrested by the Nazis. They
imprisoned 7,500 Republican refugees
in Mauthausen alone, and only 2,000
survived.

Also starting on the 22nd is the
sit-com Workin’
 Moms. This series
premiered in Canada (CBC) in 2017
and has since been renewed for two
more seasons. In January, Netflix picked
it up as an “original for worldwide
distribution.” The show features four
friends who deal with the
challenges of being working
mothers. One of the moth-
ers is played by Catherine
Reitman, who also created
the series. Reitman, 37,
is the daughter of famous
director Ivan Reitman, 72
(Ghostbusters and other
hits) and the sister of direc-
tor Jason Reitman, 41
(Juno and other hits).

Opening Feb. 20 at
the Maple Theater in
Bloomfield Township is
the documentary Who
Will Write Our History. In
November 1940, shortly
after 450,000 Jews were
forced into the Warsaw
Ghetto, a secret group
of journalists, scholars
and community leaders,
led by historian Emanuel
Ringelblum (1900-1944)
fought back by smuggling
out accounts of the atroc-
ities to the outside world.
The group, code-named
Oyneg Shabes (The Joys
of Shabbat), also created
documents to chronicle
what was happening to the
community. This film got
a rare “New York Times
Critic’
s Pick” last month.
The review says: “Using
newsreels, voice-overs and
re-enactments, Roberta
Grossman, the documen-
tary’
s director, paints a
comprehensive portrait
of the times and of the
risks taken by Ringelblum
and his group. The staged
scenes are well acted,
while readings from diaries
and letters are heartbreak-
ing.” The voice-overs are
provided by actress Joan Allen and
Oscar-winner Adrien Brody, 45, (The
Pianist). ■
