30 January 17 • 2019 jn CNN PRESENTS GILDA Even CNN is getting into the business of showing fi lms. On Jan.1, they fi rst broadcast/streamed Love, Gilda, a very-well reviewed 2018 documentary about comedian Gilda Radner (1946-1989) that played in a limited number of movie theaters last year. As I write this, Love is regularly being re-shown on CNN during its regular schedule and is available to subscribers via CNN on-demand. The fi lmmaker, Lisa Dapolito, deftly uses Gilda’ s diaries, home movies, audiotapes, performance videos and interviews with colleagues and family members. Jewish interviewees include Gilda’ s brother and neph- ew, her writing partner Alan Zweibel, 68, (he also co-produced the fi lm), SNL creator Lorne Michaels, 74, musician Paul Shaffer, 69, and SNL cast mate Laraine Newman, 66. Radner, of course, was born and raised in Detroit and, via her dia- ries, we hear her talk about attending the University Liggett School in Grosse Point and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. TV DOINGS Fam is a sit-com that premiered on CBS on Thursday, Jan 10, at 9:30 p.m. Nina Dobrev stars as Clem, a woman who seems to have a perfect life that includes an adoring fi ancé (Tone Bell). But perfection ends when her out-of-con- trol 16-year-old half-sister, Shannon (Odessa Adlon, 17), shows up unannounced in need of a place to stay. This is the fi rst big role for Adlon, the daughter of actress/writer/director Pamela Adlon, 52. Pamela Adlon’ s hit FX series Better Things features her as the single moth- er of three daughters. In real life, she is the single mother of three daughters. However, she didn’ t use any of her real daughters to play her TV daughter. (Pilot episode can be viewed free online or via on-demand). Passage, a sci-fi drama, started on Fox on Monday, Jan. 14, at 9 p.m. Mark-Paul Goss- elaar, who had a Jewish grandfather, stars as Brad Wolgast, a Federal agent tasked with bringing Amy, a young girl, to a super-se- cret medical base where she will be a test subject for a dangerous virus that has the potential to end all disease. The downside is things could go very wrong and the virus could all end all life on Earth. Wolgast bonds with Amy, becoming her surrogate father. While trying to protect her, he becomes aware of a lot of other really weird and dangerous things going on at the base. He turns to his ex-wife, Dr. Lilia Kyle, for help. Kyle is played by Emmanuelle Chriqui, 43, (Entourage). Pilot can be viewed free online or on-demand. Howie Mandel Presents Howie Mandel at the How- ie Mandel Comedy Club premieres on Showtime on Friday, Jan. 18, at 10 p.m. Mandel, 63, takes the stage of an Atlantic City comedy club that bears his name. It’ s his fi rst stand- up special in 20 years. Try This Put “Jewish” into the respective Netfl ix and Amazon search engines. On Netfl ix, I got about 90 results.
