It Doesn’t Have to Cost A Fortune . . .

Only Look Like It!

many NORCs with disproportion-
ate numbers of older adults aging
in place who never planned on
growing old in their homes.
Another point that JSL raised is
that of social isolation. They are
right that as people get older in
their homes it is harder to get out
and thus social isolation is a prob-
lem that will continue to grow.
While JFS has a small program
to e-connect survivors in virtual
senior centers, this issue is one
that our community hasn’t fully
figured out. On any given day,
there might be lots going on for
our elders at synagogues and at the
JCC and in the broader commu-
nity. Making these connections is
not always easy and takes lots of
resources.
While we need to do a better job
at helping older adults get to social

events and while we need to help
people move into residences, the
reality remains that most people
will remain in their homes. One
of our community’s top challenges
concerning older adults, as the sil-
ver tsunami takes hold, is how we
can ensure that older adults, who
do not have the various means to
care for themselves, age in place
safely in their homes.
And, by the way, there’s not one
solution we need to strive for, but
rather many: helping people in
their homes and helping people
move into new homes at JSL and
elsewhere. Time to roll up our
sleeves! ■
