Readers should be aware that The Hired
Girl has engendered some controversy.
On one hand, the quality of writing and
storytelling was recognized with conferral
of the National Jewish Book Award, the
Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction
and AJL’s Sydney Taylor Book Award.
At the same time, it has been criticized
for reinforcing stereotypes of Native
Americans. Please take advantage of this
