father, Dr. Robert Green,
former dean of the University
of Michigan Medical School
in Ann Arbor. He says no
matter what happens with the
show, he plans to continue to
pursue opportunities to make
audiences laugh.
“Our society is increasingly
divided. There’s a lot of
hatred, bitterness and
fighting,” Green says. “What
we really need more of is
kindness and laughter. I really
believe that laughter is a
universal language — it brings
people together.”
Sage Berg, 12, of Oak Park
was also in the massive line
at Cobo on audition day with
her parents Josh and Tisha
Berg. Her experience was
completely different.
“The judges laughed at
her jokes; they really liked
her jokes,” Sage’s mom Tisha
says. “They were all original,
written by her. We’re waiting
to see if she gets to the next
level.”
The family moved to Metro
Detroit from Los Angeles
about a year ago. Sage, a
seventh-grader at Norup
Middle School in Oak Park,
is involved with the Mosaic
Youth Theater of Detroit.
She recently took part in
the production Woodward
Wonderland at the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
“She has been very shy since
she was a little girl,” Tisha
adds. “But she just wanted
to do it. She’s always had a
quirky sense of humor and
she really has a knack for
comedy.”
Sage’s comedy set included
jokes about low cell phone
battery warnings and playing
the recorder in middle school
which she referred to as a
“drunk flute.” Her family
believes she was the youngest
female comedian to audition.
Now, she’s anxiously waiting
for a call in February to find
out if she advances to the
show’s next round.
“Her goal is to pursue a
career as a standup comedian
and actress,” Tisha says. “It
would be so exciting if she
makes it. We’ll keep you
posted.” ■
