“Not a week goes by that someone doesn’t call me looking for help.” – Diane Orley When her son George came to her during his freshmen year of college and told her he had attempted suicide, Diane Orley was shocked. He was suffering from bipolar disorder, and he was not alone. An increasing number of college freshmen are reporting poor mental health. Sadly, even with psychiatric treatment, George ultimately took his own life. Now Diane is determined to help others. Through its youth mental health initiative, We Need to Talk, Federation is working with families like the Orleys to lift the stigma surrounding mental illness and help the young people of our community achieve mental wellness. www.wn2t.org jn November 22 • 2018 37
