DR. GARY N.
GREENBERG, 65, for-
merly of Huntington
Woods, of Durham,
N.C., passed away
peacefully Oct. 17,
2018, after a three-
month battle with leukemia.
He leaves behind a rare legacy
of science-based humanism, social
activism, altruism, philanthropy and
principled medical professionalism.
For the last decade, Greenberg
served as the medical director of
Urban Ministries’ Open Door Clinic
in Raleigh, N.C., a free clinic for
the underprivileged and uninsured.
After initially volunteering his time
at the clinic, Greenberg became its
first staff physician, taught himself
Spanish to better serve his immigrant
patients, and went on to recruit,
train and inspire countless other
volunteer doctors and nurses who
worked alongside him. In March, the
Triangle Business Journal awarded
him a Health-care Heroes lifetime
achievement award. Urban Ministries
announced earlier this month that it
will posthumously rename the clinic
in his honor.
Greenberg spent two previous
decades at Duke University Hospital
and Medical School working in pri-
mary care, family medicine and as
chief of its Division of Occupational
and Environmental Medicine. He
also ran an email list focused on that
specialization, with more than 4,000
members in 75 countries.
Beyond his professional career,
he was a passionate activist, devot-
ing his time to Durham, N.C.
CANJ Healthcare for All North
Carolina, the N.C. Poor People’s
Campaign, the Access to Healthcare
Committee of the Durham County
Health Department, Doctors for
America, Project Access, Carolina
Jews for Justice and the Social
Action Committee of Judea Reform
Congregation.
Dr. Greenberg is survived by his
wife, Erica Rothman; sisters, Jill
Greenberg Kail and Julie Greenberg
Hazan; sons, Sam and Andy
Greenberg; their wives, Lauren
Greenberg and Malika Zouhali-
Warrall; three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his
first wife, Marcia Gottfried; and
his parents, Ronald L. and Tenny S.
Greenberg.
Contributions may be made to the
Urban Ministries of Wake County
Open Door Clinic or Democracy

DORA REINSTEIN
JOSEPHSON, 90, died
Oct. 26, 2018.
Not speaking a word
of English and nearly
penniless, she arrived
in the U.S.A. with her
husband, Solomon,
and one small child;
another was born a
month later. Due to
her grit and determi-
nation, she became
extremely successful
beyond her wildest dreams. Her
favorite words were Family! Family!
Family!
Mrs. Josephson is survived by
her children, Alan (Natie), Philip,
Florence and Suzanne; grand-
children, Frank (Jamie), Mara
and Shelley Reinstein; Racquel
(Stuart) Schwarzbard, Jonathan
(Melissa) Reinstein, and Sara
Reinstein, Jennifer and Jake Miller;
