BARBARA
GOLDFARB BEGUN
died Dec. 28, 2017.
She was born on May
11, 1931, in Detroit, the
only child of Genevieve
“Gene” and Mortimer
Levey. Her father was in the jewelry
business, so from an early age, Barbara
learned to appreciate and love fine jew-
elry. She received her BA from Wayne
State University and taught elementary
school. In 1951, she married Albert
Goldfarb and lived in the Detroit area,
where they raised two sons. Barbara
and her husbands were members of
Temple Israel, where she was instru-
mental in starting the first Jewish
bereavement group in the United States
in 1979. Barbara convened this group
every Tuesday night for nearly 20 years
to help others through their grieving
process. For this work, their group was
featured in a CBS News feature story
by journalist Charles Kuralt on his “On
the Road” series.
She is survived by her beloved son,
Bruce Goldfarb of Houston; Paul’s
daughter, Karen (Renzo) Fidani; grand-
children, Jonathan (Amoreena) Fidani,
Joshua Fidani; great-grandchildren,
Luca and Jude Fidani. Barbara is also
survived by numerous nieces, nephews,
loving cousins as well as cherished
and dear lifelong friends. The family is
extremely grateful to her devoted, lov-
ing caregivers who have become mem-
bers of the family, Marbel Rois, Susie
Sloan and Hyacinth Guerra.
