FLORENCE SACHS
FINKELSTEIN, 91, of
Birmingham, beloved
wife, mother, grand-
mother and
great-grandmother, died
peacefully on Oct. 4,
2018.
She was born in Grand Rapids
on Oct. 25, 1926, the fourth of six
children of Jacob and Rose Sachs,
Eastern European immigrants who
ran a department store.
Florence attended Union High
School and junior college in
Grand Rapids before attending the
University of Michigan, where she
graduated in 1948. That same year,
she married Lionel Finkelstein, then
a pre-medical student at Michigan.
She taught elementary school in
Ann Arbor for several years before
having the first of their four children.
The couple made a home on Detroit’s
northwest side before moving to
Birmingham in 1963. It was there
that Dr. Finkelstein became a respect-
ed psychiatrist and psychoanalyst.
Mrs. Finkelstein loved to read, tend
her garden, fuss over her children
and grandkids. She loved home dec-
orating: her own stylish, immaculate
house as well as tweaking the homes
of her children and grandchildren.
She was an enthusiastic member of
several book groups. For many years,
she volunteered for Brandeis National
Women’s Committee, chairing the
committee’s renowned annual used
book sale. She will be missed by all
those who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Finkelstein is survived by
her husband, Lionel; sister, Helen
Glick of McLean, Va.; her son,
James (Elnora) of West Bloomfield;
daughters, Judy (Cliff) Kashtan of
Minneapolis, Minn., Martha (Eric)
Young of Ann Arbor and Amy
(Andrew) Dick of Bethesda, Md.; 12
grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
