Time for Cookies N’ Dreams
Get ready for some great cookies, lively entertainment and fun for the whole
family as the Friends of Camp-Mak-A-Dream Michigan Chapter hosts its 20th
annual Cookies N’ Dreams fundraiser from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at
Somerset Collection North in Troy.
Area bakers bring their favorite cookies for this fun contest. Guests sample
each tasty treat and vote for the best in a variety of categories. Food, beverages,
entertainment and activities for all ages will be provided throughout the evening.
Proceeds benefit Camp-Mak-A-Dream, a cost-free camp in Montana for chil-
dren and young adults touched by cancer founded by the late Sylvia and Harry
Granader of Beverly Hills. Most of the money raised goes toward scholarships for
Michigan campers.
Event chairs are Catherine and Nathan Forbes; the honorary chair event com-
mittee includes Connie Jacob, Dana and David Jacob, and Joannie Barker.
Cost for the event for adults ranges from $60 per ticket to sponsorship tickets
at $500. Children up to age 17 pay their age; children age 3 and younger are free.
To register and buy tickets, go to campdreammich.org/
cookies-n-dreams-registration. For questions, call (248) 723-5575. ■
Veterans Day Shabbat
In anticipation of Veterans Day, Congregation Shaarey Zedek will honor all
Jewish veterans and current members of the American armed forces during
Shabbat services Oct. 20. The men and women who’ve defended and continue to
preserve the values and safety of the nation will be proudly acknowledged, as well
as veterans of blessed memory.
Services begin at 9 a.m. and include a special processional led by the Jewish
War Veterans Color Guard, Southfield Police Color Guard, assembled veterans
and family members.
The program will include military anthems led by Hazzan David Propis, words
from Brig. Gen. Donald Schenk, Col. Edward Hirsch (U.S. Army Special Forces
and Commander, Michigan Jewish War Veterans), Capt. Donald Wagner (U.S.
Army Military Police Corps), Rabbi Aaron Starr and more.
Special keynote speaker will be Elizabeth Tam (wife of the late Robert Tam, a
U.S. Army colonel), who will share experiences and sentiments of what it was like
to be a family on the home front.
Special thanks to the Shaarey Zedek Veteran’s Shabbat Committee: Donald
Wagner, chair; Stan Boykansky, Schenk, Linda Cohen, David Cuttner, Bill
Glogower, Eileen Glogower, Paul Gold, Lawrence Katz and Shirlee Marshall.
Kiddush to follow services. ■

Rabbi Shneur Silberberg of Tugman Bais Chabad, in partnership with
JCC’s Fed-Ed will present a six-part series titled “Happy to the Core: Jewish
Perspectives on Positive Psychology” beginning the week of Oct. 21.
Each class will be offered twice: Sundays, 11 a.m. at Bais Chabad of West
Bloomfield, and Thursdays, 7 p.m. at the Jewish Federation Building in
Bloomfield Township.
“Our happiness impacts literally every part of our lives: marriage, health,
job, friendships. Most of us know a friend or family member who struggles
with being happy, and we would love to provide the guidance that would help
them. All can benefit from a little more happiness,” Silberberg said.
Prepared in partnership between JLI (Rohr Jewish Learning Institute) and
the Washington School of Psychiatry, the series combines Jewish thought with
the latest research in the fast-growing field of positive psychology.
Cost for the series is $80 (includes textbook). Scholarships are available.
For details and to reserve a spot, visit www.baischabad.com/HAPPY or
contact Silberberg at Rabbishneur@baischabad.com or (248) 207-5513. ■
