jews d in the Noted Doctor To Speak For Hadassah Dr. Oren Tepper will keynote the 2018 Judi Schram Annual meeting of Greater Detroit Hadassah on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. Tepper is a plastic sur- geon, teacher and innovator, Tepper specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and is director of aesthetic surgery at the Montefiore Health System and an assistant professor of plastic sur- gery atAlbert Einstein College of Medicine. He recently received international recognition for his role in the suc- cessful separation of conjoined twins Jadon and Anais McDonald. The his- toric event was reported as a CNN exclusive as well as a documentary, Special Report: Separated: Saving the Twins. This year’s event is sup- ported by Brad Schram and named in loving memory of his wife, Judi, a preschool speech pathologist, active community volunteer, phi- lanthropist, travel blogger, author, poet and painter. Beth Olem Cemetery was established in 1862 and remains one of the oldest historic sites in the Jewish community of greater Detroit. With the cooperation of the cities of Detroit and Hamtramck and the continuing support of General Motors, the cemetery has retained the dignity and spirituality of the founders of Detroit’s Jewish community. Beth Olem is located in its original location, now within the site of the General Motors Cadillac (Poletown) Plant. Entrance to the cemetery is the through the main GM entrance, where plant security will escort visitors to the Beth Olem Cemetery. • Local Bike Drive Set Sept. 22 Farmington Hills-based The Shirt Box and Walled Lake-based Kenny’s Lakes Area Auto Experts, a vehicle repair shop, will once again hold a bike drive at their respective shops through Saturday, Sept. 22. The friendly competition between the businesses has garnered more than 400 bikes in the last few years. The donations will benefit Back Alley Bikes (BAB) in Detroit, which will put the bicycles in the hands of students in need this school year. Bikes of all sizes and conditions, as well as new bike helmets, will be accepted. 24 September 13 • 2018 jn Founded in 2000, the nonprofit BAB is a community bike shop and repair and resource center that pro- vides cycling education and services with a focus on youth development, sustainable practices and commu- nity access. The organization accepts dona- tions of used bikes of any type, style and condition for its Earn a Bike program for youth ages 10 to 17. There, participants learn how to fix the bike, which they then keep. Alternatively, for children under age 10, the nonprofit will repair the bike prior to the donation. •
