Deli Delights

T

Danny Raskin

Senior Columnist

Tony’s Deli serves

up goodness on its

20th anniversary.

Tony and Sonja Perkovic

here was a time when
h
Jewish delicatessens were
everywhere … Today,
the much smaller numbers are
bundled in varied areas … Some
have gone out to farther regions
… Or the lake sectors like Tony’s
Delicatessen, on Orchard Lake
Road in Keego Harbor, ( former
locale of Dave’s Deli) … celebrat-
ing its 20th anniversary.
In Oak Park alone at one
time they were numerous … On
Dexter, there were seven within
blocks of each other.
Tony’s Deli owner Tony
Perkovic discovered that regard-
less where it may be, a delicates-
sen owner who has enjoyed pre-
vious success in the deli dining
field will continue on that path
and again relish much satisfac-
tion at seeing so many smiling
customers wherever he goes.
Seeing comeback attendance
is a restaurant owner’s great-
est pride because it tells a huge
tale of gratification … Especially
delicatessen restaurants where
food names are much the same
… Jewish people know the deli-
catessens that will give fulfilment
to favorite wants … Tony’s expe-
rience in the delicatessen restau-
rant is evidenced by his many
times returning clientele.
The importance of a good
Jewish delicatessen is rarely over-
stated … Eateries like Tony’s Deli,
among others, are important for
many reasons … like the only

places
to get h
homemade
l
d chicken
hi k
noodle soup, cabbage soup, kre-
plach, mishmosh, etc., or salads
like its Gantzah Magilla of salad
greens, corned beef, turkey, pas-
trami, American or Swiss cheese,
hard-boiled egg, etc. … There are
hardly better sandwiches than
corned beef and pastrami from a
Jewish delicatessen like Tony’s …
or even its veggie sandwiches or
burgers, anytime from morning
to dinner.
Tony’s Delicatessen is well
noted for items made by fam-
ily members … Like its matzah
balls, stuffed peppers, kreplach,
potato latkes, cheese blintzes,
etc., by wife, Sonja, among her
other chores … and the line
cooking by brother Mario of the
breakfasts, sandwiches, salads,
etc. … and Tony’s soups, tuna,
eggs and salads, among the large
list of goodies.
It answers the bell with true
homemade winners in its own
baking of brownies, cookies and
cakes.
Tony’s Deli is open Monday-
Friday, 8 a.m.- 9 p.m., Saturday
8-8 and Sunday 8-3.
Comfortable seating is 58 … as
it continues to be listed among
Michigan’s better delicatessens.
REARVIEW MIRROR …
When a customer came into
Stage Deli years back on 9 Mile in
Oak Park and was a dead ringer
for character actor Chill Wills
(Giant, Gunsmoke, Alamo, etc.)

“When we are no longer able to change a situation —
we are challenged to change ourselves”

… Stage
Deli
S
D li was then
h noted
d for
f
its prominence in having show
biz and film entertainers as cus-
tomers so diners were almost
duped out of some bucks when
the impersonator said he was
chairing a fake charity … Until
owner Jack Goldberg came over
and introduced him to a friend
of Jack’s and Harriett’s … the real
Chill Wills!
JEWISH DELICATESSENS
have always played a major part
in a person’s culinary wants
… In Oak Park, former mayor,
author Jerry Naftaly, says that if
he were mayor again, he would
certainly welcome a recognition
of the great Oak Park delicates-
sens of yesteryears and today,
which have satisfied the palates
of so many people … Like Tony’s
Deli and others of today, Oak
Park’s delis, Esquire II, Northgate,
Joey’s, Sabra, Liberman’s, Hy
Horenstein’s, Stage, Katz’s,
Benny’s, etc., were favorite selec-
tions … Their memories by many
are endless.

JIM BRADY’S in Royal Oak,
South Main, is now open for
brunch …9 a.m.-2 p.m. on both
Saturdays on Sundays … It is
Jim Brady’s first brunch since
opening in 2015 … A second Jim
Brady’s will open this year on
S. Main Street in Ann Arbor …
And a third location in Midtown
Detroit is expected to open in
2019 … All will just be called Jim
Brady’s … no more city connota-
tion.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE
(Repeated on request) … An
emaciated and bedraggled bum
walks up to a stranger and begs
for enough money to get some-
thing to eat, saying, “My wife ran
off with my best friend. I lost
everything: my home, my busi-
ness, and I’m starving. I haven’t
eaten in over a week.”
The stranger notices the bum
flipping a $20 gold piece up and
down and asks why he doesn’t
use the $20 gold piece to get
something to eat … “What?”
cried the bum. “Use my lucky
coin?”
CONGRATS … To Barbara
Steinman on her birthday … To
Sid and Sarah Alterman on their
31st anniversary. •
