Detroit Families

Fall Showcase, a fashion event at
the council re|sale shop in Berkley
operated by the National Council of
Jewish Women, Michigan, takes place
this weekend with proceeds benefit-
ing women, children and families
in the community. The event takes
place from noon-4 p.m. on Sunday,
Aug. 26, with VIP early entry ( for a
fee of $25) from 10 a.m. to noon. VIP’s
should pre-register with payment at

Donated fall fashion items for
women, children and men will be
sold to support the National Council
of Jewish Women, Michigan’s ser-
vices and programs that include a
playground for disabled children,
court advocacy, bereavement support
groups, ensuring people get regis-
tered to vote, back to school items for
needy children in Detroit, campaigns
to prevent human trafficking, kosher
“Meals on Wheels” and much more.
Also, just prior to the Fall
Showcase, items currently at the

council re|sale shop will be 75
percent off on Aug 23. On Aug. 24,
shoppers can fill a bag of items for
$12. The council re|sale shop will be
closed on Saturday, Aug. 25, in prepa-
ration for the Fall Showcase. The
council re|sale shop is located at 3297

Candidate Forum

Jewish Community Relations
Council/AJC (JCRC/AJC) will host its
Candidate Forum, 7 p.m., Thursday,
Sept. 6, at Adat Shalom Synagogue,
Farmington Hills. Major party can-
didates from Congressional Districts
9 and 11 and the gubernatorial race
have been invited to address topics
of concern to the Jewish community
including the U.S./Israel relationship,
immigration, healthcare reform and
global affairs.
Moderating the congressional dis-
cussions will be Melissa Weinberg
Spence, native Detroiter and AJC’s
deputy director of the Office of
Government and International Affairs.
JCRC/AJC Executive Director
David Kurzmann will lead the

gubernatorial discussion.
“Our aim in hosting this
Candidate Forum is to ensure that
the Detroit Jewish community is
an educated and prepared elector-
ate, especially when it comes to the
most competitive races,” Kurzmann
said. “We are particularly excited to
welcome Melissa Weinberg Spence
back to her hometown for this eve-
ning of informative discussions.”
